Following a national search, Richard Bland College of William & Mary President Debbie L. Sydow named Scott Newton Director of Athletics on May 9, 2019. Newton, who joined the Statesmen in June 2017 as the school's first Women's Volleyball Head Coach, had served as the Interim Director of Athletics since April 2018.

"Scott Newton has steadily advanced RBC's goals for athletics over the past year, and the College is fortunate to secure him as the new Director of Athletics," said Sydow. "He has built strong relationships, both internally and externally, and he is committed to developing student-athletes and coaches to the highest levels, so I anticipate great things for the future."

Newton will continue to serve as head women's volleyball coach. Last season he led the Statesmen to the Region X Championship and a berth in the NJCAA Division I Regional Championships. For his efforts, he was named Region X Coach of the Year. At RBC he also serves on the Faculty Committee for Student-Athlete Success.

"I want to thank President Sydow and the RBC community for giving me the opportunity to lead Statesmen Athletics," said Newton. "Due to the hard work of the coaches and support from the campus community, the athletics department is headed in the right direction. The department will continue to meet the goal of increasing the number of athletes who shine, both academically and athletically, combined with the desire to win regional championships."

Prior to RBC, Newton served as the Girls Volleyball Head Coach at Glen Allen High School since May 2012, as well as the Juniors Program Manager for the Richmond Volleyball Club (RVC) since November 2011. Newton led Glen Allen to a five-year record of 77-49, including the 2014 Conference 11 Championship while advancing to the Region 5A South Semifinals. Newton was the 2012 Capital District and 2016 Conference 11 Coach of the Year.

Newton supervised all teams, activities, and camps involving the juniors program at RVC.  He served as the technical director in volleyball training while coordinating tournament participation and travel. During Newton's tenure at RVC, 66 former athletes have gone on to play volleyball at the collegiate level. He founded the sand volleyball program for the club in 2013, providing more in-depth training, which has had a positive impact on the indoor game.

Prior to his time in Richmond, Newton was the Girls Volleyball Head Coach at Blacksburg High School during 2010 and 2011. He led BHS to a two-year record of 40-17, including the program's first 20-win season and first two trips to the Group 3A West Region semifinals.  Newton was the 2011 River Ridge District Coach of the Year.

Newton has additional coaching experience with Roanoke United 17 Open Volleyball (2010-11), River Valley Juniors 17 in Blacksburg (2009-10), Auburn Middle School in Riner (2008-09) and Eastern Montgomery High School in Shawsville (2007-08).

A Richmond native, Newton earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Sport and Health Education from Radford University in 2010, with a minor in Business Administration and a concentration in Sports Administration. He was a student assistant coach for women's volleyball during 2008, founded the Radford Men's Club Volleyball Team and was a member of the Sports Club Council.
