STATESMEN DROP TITANS TO EARN FIRST CONFERENCE WIN

Petersburg, VA, November 16, 2013- The Richard Bland College Statesmen claimed their fifth straight victory en route to their 100-63 win over Guilford Tech. The Titans fall to 2-2 and dropping their first conference game.

The Statesmen jumped out on the visitors early in the game, however, Guilford Tech climbed back to even the score at 20 with 10 minutes left in the first half. The Statesmen led at halftime 44-29. In the second half, the Statesmen jumped out on a 9-0 run with a three point play the old fashioned way (adding a free throw), followed by two straight possessions where Trayvonte Brown found Micah Thomas in transition for two three point baskets.

The Statesmen were up 63-32 at the 14:31 minute mark of the second half. The scoring continued as Marquis Powell nailed two back-to-back three's from LeQuan Thomas during the 13 minute mark to out the Statesmen up 73-36. The front line joined in the action on a put back from Melvin Gregory to extend the lead to 75-39.

The Statesmen were led by Micah Tomas and Tavon Mealy with 16 points each, Mealy flirted with a double-double by grabbing nine boards. Avery Ugba tossed in 13 points while Jareese Cooley added 12 points. Trayvonte Brown started in his first game and brought great energy to the team by contributing eight points, seven assists, and four rebounds.

Richard Bland will be back in action on Wednesday November 20, 2013 at 6 pm to face the Vance-Granville Vanguards. This will be the Statesmen second conference game of the season.
