No. 11 RICHARD BLAND DOWNS CATONSVILLE IN OVERTIME THRILLER

CATONSVILLE, Md. – The No. 11 Richard Bland Statesmen men's basketball team managed to escape with an 84-81 over-time victory over the Cardinals of CCBC Catonsville on Tuesday night. This marks the third consecutive win for the Statesmen.

Tavon Mealy (Richmond, VA) led the Statesmen with 23 points while charting eight rebounds, LeQuan Thomas (Virginia Beach, VA) added 10 points and dished out seven assists while Reginald Moses (Henrico, VA) chipped in nine points off the bench.

CCBC Catonsville's (1-3) Quinton Jackson led all scorers with 37 points in the loss, following Marcus Knight with 12 points and Tikeace Harris with 10 points.

RBC led at halftime, 39-36 after shooting 53.1 –percent from field goal range and 50 –percent from behind the arc while Catonsville shot 55 –percent from the field and 33.3 –percent from the three-point line. 

As the second half got underway, the Statesmen found themselves trailing late in the game, 74-75 but Mealy (Richmond, VA) would take a charge with under a minute left in the game to give the Statesmen the possession again.

Just as it appeared the momentum had been shifted in favor of the Statesmen, Jhamir White (Paterson, NJ) would turn the ball over with the clock sitting at 41 seconds remaining, following a personal foul on Thomas (Virginia Beach, VA) to send Catonsville's Jackson to the line for two.

Jackson would sink them both to allow the Cardinals to gain the lead at 76-75. The next possession, Avery Ugba (Silver Springs, MD) throws the ball inbound attempting to throw to an teammate but it landed in Jackson's hand as White (Paterson, NJ) was forced to foul him with 22 seconds left in the game.

Jackson shot 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to put the Cardinals up 77-75 as RBC called a timeout for one last shot.

It would be Thomas (Virginia Beach, VA) who would score an easy lay-up to send the game into overtime at 77-77.

In overtime, Mealy scored two back-to-back baskets to gain control at 81-77 before Catonsville would score again to keep the game close.

However, the Statesmen never looked back as Moses (Henrico, VA) scored a lay-up to secure the victory 84-81.

Richard Bland will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 15th in the Region 10 Blast-Off Tournament against Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
