MEALY, UGBA OFFENSE ERUPTS IN 110-63 WIN OVER WAKE TECH ON SUNDAY

PETERSBRUG, Va. – Eighth-ranked Richard Bland men's basketball team manhandled conference foe Wake Technical Community College in a Region X match-up to give the Statesmen its 25th victory on the season.

 

Six Statesmen scored in double-figures including Armstrong product Tavon Mealy who led the way with 25 points (12-of-15) to go along with 14 rebounds with eight being offensive. Silver Springs native, Avery Ugba charted 20 points (9-of-10) while grabbing 12 rebounds including seven defensive and Lancaster product Melvin Gregory netted season-high 17 points (6-of-12) adding 12 rebounds, six offensive and defensive.

 

Henrico product Reginald Moses scored 14 points, following Heritage product Troy Gibson with career-high 11 points and Hopewell product, Pedro Berrios added 10 points. The squad's performance recorded its second highest scoring total this season, after a victory over Vance-Granville 115-58 back in the beginning of the season on Nov. 25th.

 

Richard Bland (25-4 overall, 16-3 Region X) surpassed 100 points for the third time this season. Mealy's layup at the 4:39 mark scored the 100th point.

 

Richard Bland jumped on the scoreboard first but saw its two-point lead go away as the Eagles (8-19 overall, 4-13 Region X) surged a 5-0 run. The Statesmen trailed for three minutes and eleven seconds until Moses drained a 3-pointer to take the lead back with 15:01 left in the first half.

 

The Statesmen would never look back to command a 50-26 lead at intermission.

 

The second half was all Statesmen as each RBC player scored at least once in the contest.

 

RBC outscored the Eagles 76-22 in the paint, 28-10 in points off of turnovers, 48-8 in second chance points and 42-20 in bench points.

 

The Statesmen return to action and will host its final regular season game on Wednesday, Feb. 25th when they go head-to-head with No. 13 Bryant & Stratton for the regular season championship title. The contest will recognize nine sophomores who will play their last regular season game in Statesman Hall. Tip-off is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
