A FOND FAREWELL

 

PETERSBURG, Va. – The Richard Bland men's basketball team will concludes the regular-season and home portion of its 2014-2015 schedule on tonight as they host conference foe Bryant & Stratton. Before we tip-off, we would like to honor nine Statesmen basketball players who have committed themselves to excellence at Richard Bland College.  

 

Fond Farewell

 

Evan Bates

Bates has played in 57 games in his career, with 35 starts before suffering a hamstring injury a few weeks ago. He shoots 41.5 percent from field goal range, 34.8 percent from beyond the arc, and 72.7 percent from the free-throw line this season. Bates scored a career-high 24 points including 5-of-6 from the 3-point line at Tidewater this season. Bates will be graduating with an associate degree in the spring.

 

Jhamir White

In his first year at RBC after transferring from Virginia State University, White is second on the team in assist at 3.1 per contest. He posted career-high 13 points at Potomac State this season. After minor injuries throughout the season, White is averaging 30.0 percent from the 3-point line and is a 67.7 percent shooter from the free-throw line. White will be graduating with an associate degree in the spring.

 

Joshua Marshall

In his first year as a Statesmen, Marshall posted a career-high 8 points at Vance-Granville earlier this season. Also, pronged by injuries, Marshall defensive presences helped the Statesmen in the rebounding column as he averaged 2.1 rebounds per contest. Marshall will be graduating with an associate degree in the spring.

 

LeQuan Thomas

Thomas has played in 59 games and 49 total starts in his career, he ranks seventh in Region X for assists (4.6) this season, averaging 5.9 points per game. He also leads the team and ranks first in the conference in steals for a total of 59 on the season and 2.0 per outing. Thomas posted a career-high 13 points at Bryant & Stratton this season.

 

Brian Adkins

Adkins has played in 54 games in his career, with 21 starts this season. He ranks third on the team in assist, averaging 2.4 per outing for a total of 57 on the season. Adkins posted a career- high 19 points against Vance Granville this year.

 

Pedro Berrios

After suffering a heart-attack one summer ago, Berrios played his first career game as a Statesmen on Dec. 7th against Lenoir. He posted a career-high 14 points against Cape Fear that including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. He leads the team in 3-point shooting at 41.5 percent.

 

Tavon Mealy

Probably noted as one of the best under-sized post players in school history, Mealy has started 52 of the 59 games played in his career. He is the leading scorer for the team, averaging 18 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per outing. He has scored in double figures 28-of-29 games this season. Mealy ranks third in the nation for DII in field-goal percentage at 65.6 percent and has posted a career-high 33 points at Potomac State on the season. Mealy was named to the All-Conference team during his freshman year and was selected DII Player of the Week on numerous occasions.  

 

Melvin Gregory

The 6-foot-8 forward/center transfer from Mount St. Mary's University made an immediate spark since becoming a Statesmen last season. Melvin has played in 59 games in his career and ranks third on the team for rebounds at 6.2 per game. He was selected to the All-Conference team during his first season and posted a career- high 22 points at Vance Granville in the 2013-14 season.  

 

Avery Ugba

Ugba ranks first in Region X -DII in rebounding, averaging 10.1 per contest which puts him eighth nationally for DII men's basketball. He ranks second in the conference in blocks, with a total of 38 on the season to round out 1.3 per game.  Ugba was selected to the All-Conference Team and was named Player of the Week during his first season. Ugba posted a career- high 28 points to go along with 14 rebounds at Lenoir on February 7th. Ugba is the third leading scoring on the team, averaging 12.8 ppg.
