RBC HOOPS FACES MCC-PENN VALLEY IN FIRST ROUND OF NJCAA TOURNAMENT

DANVILLE, ILL. – The No. 3 Richard Bland men's basketball team earned its school's first bid to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Championship Tournament, with a No. 3 seed in the tournament. The Statesmen (28-4) will face Metropolitan Community College of Penn Valley in the first round Tuesday, March 17 in Mary Miller Gymnasium.

RBC enters the tournament on a six-game winning streak, averaging 86.7 points per contest. The No. 3 seed is the first in school history for the Statesmen. The Statesmen are led by Region X player of the year and Armstrong High product, Tavon Mealy who is averaging 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per outing. Silver Springs, Md., native Avery Ugba averages 13.1 points and a team-high 10 rebounds per contest. Reginald Moses, a product of Henrico High School adds 13. 6 points per contest.

 

The Region X conference has made a total of eleven appearances in the NJCAA Tournament and holds an 11-18 overall record in the tournament which include DI and DII combined.

 

The Scouts (9-22), located in Kansas City, Mo., and coached by Marcus Harvey, claimed the 2015 Region XIII Championship with a 92-67 victory over North Arkansas. It marked the Scouts thirteenth Region 16 title to book its thirteenth National Tournament appearance.

 

MCC-Penn Valley won the National Championship in 1996. The Scouts will come to Danville riding a fix-game winning streak.

 

MCC- Penn Valley features six players scoring in double-figures, including Amaad Wainwright averaging 18.2 points, following Mccoy Julius with 15.6, Kwanique Martin and Williams Kindred at 10.5, Cornell Duley and Tyson Deago with 10.2 and 10.1, respectively.

 

This will mark the first meeting vs. MCC-Penn Valley in school history.

 

Also earning top seeds are Schoolcraft (Michigan) College and Phoenix College who sit atop at the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in front of the Statesmen. The Final Four will be played March 20 at Mary Miller Gymnasium in Danville, Ill.
