A WELCOME BACK FOR CHAMPIONS – STATESMEN RETURN TO CAMPUS WITH A HUGE CELEBRATION

PETERSBURG, Va. – After a flight delay and three hour bus ride back to Petersburg, Va., the Richard Bland College men's basketball team received a very warm welcome when it returned on campus in front of the student commons on Sunday afternoon.

Saturday, the Statesmen downed John Wood Community College 64-53 to capture the NJCAA Division II National Championship title, the first ever in program history. Three players were named to the All-Tournament team including the Most Outstanding Player in the tournament - Avery Ugba (Silver Springs, MD), Tavon Mealy (Richmond, VA) and LeQuan Thomas (Virginia Beach, VA). The man who brought athletics back to the campus of RBC, only to lead his team to a national title in just two years of athletics being reinstated from a 20-year hiatus was named the NJCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Coach – head coach Chuck Moore.

The College greeted the team with a celebration that included students holding signs and balloons, men's soccer team, members of the softball team, both men and women's track and field, alumni and members of the Statesmen community.

The celebration also recognized Joshua Washington (Woodbridge, VA) and Tia Holmes (Chesterfield, VA), two student-athletes of the men and women's track and field team that represented Richard Bland in the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. earlier this month.

Coach Moore and track and field head coach Kerry Gray spoke very highly of their teams' and all that was accomplished this season while giving a lot of credit to the fan base, students, the president and the entire community.

Richard Bland, also the Region X Conference champions, is enjoying the finest season on the hardwood in school history. Before winning the conference championship back on March 7, the Statesmen had only won it twice since then and had never reached the NJCAA Division II tournament.
