MOORE NAMED 2015 VASID COLLEGE DIVISION MEN’S BASKETBALL ALL-STATE COACH OF THE YEAR

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Highlighted by a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship, the Statesmen of Richard Bland College led the way on the 2015 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State Men's Basketball team. After a 20-year hiatus in the basketball program at RBC, head coach Chuck Moore delivered a national title in just the second season back, earning VaSID Coach of the Year honors in the process.

Nine different schools were represented on the first and second teams, led by a pair of selections for Virginia Wesleyan College and Richard Bland College. Sophomore Tavon Mealy (Richmond, VA) and Avery Ugba (Silver Springs, MD) was selected All-State Second Team along with four other players including Clayton Murtha (Washington & Lee), Mike Cherry (CNU), Jamal Pullen (Ferrum), Joe Hassell (Randolph-Macon)

The historic year for Richard Bland College began when Moore brought athletics back to the school in 2013-14, where he led the men's basketball team to an overall record of 27-4. This season, he managed to improve on the top overall ranking in 2014 by leading his squad to a 32-4 overall record and a NJCAA Division II National Championship.

The Statesmen won its first Region 10 conference championship, dropping Louisburg College, 80-77, for the first time since 1992. They would then go on to defeat John Wood Community College, 64-53, to capture the title. Three players earned All-Region honors, and three were also tabbed to the NJCAA All-Tournament team.

Joining Moore on the VaSID first team were players from four other programs. A USCAA All-American, two All-Region selections and the ODAC scoring leader were also listed in 2015. They were Jay Melendez (Apprentice School), a first team All-American, Marcus Badger (Randolph-Macon) & David Falk (Eastern Mennonite), a pair of All-Region picks, and Ed Reddick (Bridgewater), who averaged 18.7 points per game.
