HENDERSON NAMED COORDINATOR OF ATHLETICS ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Petersburg, Va., (August 14, 2015) -- Brian Henderson, who has served on the Richard Bland College men's basketball staff since June of 2013 and played an instrumental role in helping the Statesmen win the 2015 NJCAA Division II National Championship, has been named Coordinator of Athletics Academic Support at Richard Bland. Henderson also serves as an assistant men's basketball coach for the Statesmen. The announcement came from Chuck Moore, Director of Athletics and Head Men's Basketball Coach.

Previous to his appointment at Richard Bland, Henderson was an Exceptional Education Teacher at Varina High School since September 2011.

Henderson, a native of Richmond, VA., has a basketball pedigree that includes starring as a sharpshooting guard at Old Dominion University from 2004-08. Following graduation, Henderson played professional basketball in the German Basketball League from October 2008 to April 2010.

"This is an exciting time for Statesmen Athletics with the addition of Brian Henderson as our Coordinator of Academic Support," said Moore. "He was a valuable asset to our national championship team last year and is invaluable. His enthusiasm will be contagious for all those around him as they pursue the mission of Richard Bland and of the Athletic Department.  I could not feel more blessed to be able to attract a staff member with a high character, passion, and work ethic of Brian."

A Dean's List student-athlete at Old Dominion, Henderson graduated in 2008 with a B.A. degree in Sports Management. Old Dominion's all-time leader in games played (134), Henderson ranks fifth all-time in school history with 174 3-pointers. Heading into his senior year, Henderson was selected as a pre-season Honorable Mention All-Colonial Athletic Association selection. He finished as the team's second leading scorer (9.4 ppg) and tallied a career-high 26 points against Virginia in the CBI quarterfinals. He tallied 20 points over Virginia Commonwealth University in ODU's first win over VCU in the Siegel Center. He finished with 19 double figures scoring games and ranked 13th in the CAA in three-point field goals made (59) and percentage (.360). In addition to being named a co-team MVP, Henderson was selected the CAA Player of the Week on Feb. 18.

As a junior, Henderson started in 32 of 33 games, scoring a then career-high 24 points in a CAA Tournament game against Towson. He notched 23 points against Winthrop and canned a career-high seven 3-pointers against Winthrop. His sophomore year Henderson started in 30 of 34 games and led the Monarchs in 3-point field goal percentage (.378). He tallied a then-career high 20 points against Marist in a game that saw the guard connect on six of eight 3-point shots.

Henderson played his scholastic basketball at Varina High School, where he averaged 20.9 points, 9.5 assists, 6.5 rebounds and 3.8 steals per game as a senior. He finished his two-year varsity career with 956 career points, leading Varina to an 18-8 record and a spot in the regional quarterfinals. He was named First-Team All-District, Second-Team All-Region, and All-Metro. He scored a career high 34 points against Monacan and tallied 21 points with 12 assists versus rival Henrico.
