COLORFUL CLASHES: STATESMEN FACE NORTHWEST FLORIDA AND CHIPOLA

PETERSBURG, Va., (Nov. 12, 2015) – In what NJCAA historical records indicate is an extremely rare occurrence, the defending NJCAA Division II national champions and defending NJCAA Division I national champions will face one another when the Richard Bland College men's basketball team meets Northwest Florida State College on Friday, Nov. 13 at 8:30 p.m.

The colorful clash versus Northwest Florida State College is one of the eagerly anticipated games since head coach Chuck Moore announced the 2015-16 schedule in September. Richard Bland faces the host Raiders in the Bruce Stewart Classic in Niceville, Fl., making it the second straight long weekend away following last weekend's trip to Newark, N.J. for the Essex County College Wolverine Classic.
 

It's not the only marquee matchup for the Statesmen in their trip to the Sunshine State. On Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., Richard Bland plays Chipola College, based in Marianna, Florida, whom Moore calls the "Kentucky of junior college basketball."

RECORDS: Richard Bland is 3-1 … Northwest Florida State College is 4-0 … Chipola is 2-2 and plays San Jacinto College-Central in the first round of the Bruce Stewart Classic on Friday.

ROAD TESTED: Friday's game marks the fourth straight away contest for the Statesman … Before returning home on Nov. 24 to face Vance-Granville, RBC will have played seven straight away games … The distance between Petersburg and Niceville. Florida is 696 miles, putting travel mileage well over 1,000 thus far.
 

ABOUT NORTHWEST FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE: The Raiders are the defending NJCAA Division I champions, having compiled a 32-2 record last year …  The Raiders were ranked in the pre-season NJCAA poll at No. 3 … Northwest Florida closed out the 2014-15 season on an eight game winning streak and won the NJCAA Division I championship with an 83-80 victory over South Plains College … The key victory came in the semifinals, a 105-103 overtime win over Georgia Highlands College.

BALANCED SCORING: The Raiders average 82 points per game … Sophomore Shadell Millinghaus averages 15.0 ppg, followed by Jared Wilson-Frame (12.5 ppg) and freshman Daryl Edwards (11.5 ppg) … Millinghaus leads NFSC in rebounding (6.5 rpg).
 

WHAT'S NEXT: The Statesmen will face a strong Chipola team on Saturday and make the trip back North to play their sixth straight road game against Lenoir C.C. on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.

60 PLUS AND COUNTING: Just four games into his third season at Richard Bland, Moore has compiled a 62-10 (.861) record … He earned win No. 60 in the season opener against Frederick Community College (81-59).
 

SOPHOMORE LEADERSHIP: Sophomore Troy Gibson, the lone returner from last year's championship team, has scored in double figures in three of four games, including a career-best 25 points in his last game against Harcum College.

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARDS: With an average of 7.5 rebounds per game, Gibson leads the Statesmen in rebounding.
 

SMOOTH OPERATOR: Freshman Deandre Clark ranks second on the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and has a season high 25 points against CCBC Dundalk to his credit.

MR. CONSISTENCY: Freshman Myles Markland has scored in double figures in all four games and ranks third on the team in scoring (12.3 ppg).
 

EMERGING: In his last three games, freshman Jordan Griggs has played 28 minutes each contest and has displayed an emerging game … He scored a career best 25 points against Essex C.C., earning ten of those points from the free throw line where he went 10 of 14 … Griggs ranks fourth on the team in scoring (12.0).

SHOCK BLOCKERS: With an average of 5.5 blocks per game, RBC ranks 12th best in the country in NJCAA Division II.
 

LEADER OF THE BLOCK: Freshman Jaquan Wooten leads the Statesmen in blocks, averaging 2.5 per game … RBC had a season best nine against Harcum.

FIELD GOAL PROWESS: In three of four games this season, the Statesmen have shot 45 percent or better from the field, including a season best 55.9 percent against CCBC Dundalk.
