STATESMEN SOAR INTO WEDNESDAY HOME GAME VS. CCBC CATONSVILLE

PETERSBURG, Va., (Dec. 15, 2015) – The Richard Bland College men's basketball team will conclude its three game home schedule and close out its first semester of action on Wednesday, Dec. 16 with a home game against CCBC Catonsville at 6 p.m.

Richard Bland (7-6, 3-2 Region X) is coming off back-to-back wins over the weekend against Guilford Tech and Wake Tech and looks to run its winning streak to three straight.

LAST SEASON VS. CCBC CATONSVILLE: Played on November 11, 2014 in Catonsville, Maryland, the Statesmen and Cardinals played a tight game that ended in an 84-81 overtime victory for the Statesmen in the third game of the season. The recap can be found at this link.
The teams did not face each other in the 2013-14 regular season, but played in a pre-season scrimmage.
 

FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES: Four players remain in double figures scoring, a statistic that has been in tact for the last two weeks. The Statesmen are led by sophomore forwards Troy Gibson (13.7 ppg) and Devin Smith (13.6 ppg), followed by freshmen Gevon Arrington (10.7 ppg) and Deandre Clark (19.6 ppg).

SOPHOMORE LEADERSHIP: Gibson, the lone returner from last year's championship team, has scored in double figures in eleven of thirteen games this season, including a career-best 25 points against Harcum College ... Against Pitt C.C., frontcourt mate Smith notched a career-best 24 points, and has scored in double figures in six of seven games since making his debut against Lenoir C.C. on Nov. 9.
 

OFF THE BOARDS: Freshman Jaquan Wooten leads the Statesmen in rebounding (9.7 rpg), which is 10th best in NJCAA Division II in the latest NJCAA statistics, which are updated on a regular basis … Wooten has corralled 96 defensive boards this season, which is 3rd best in the nation. … The freshman has had double figures in rebounding in eight of thirteen games, including double figures rebounding in three of his last four games.

REBOUNDING AS A TEAM: Against Lenoir Community College on Nov. 18, the Statesmen hauled in 61 rebounds, tying a mark of 61 set against Cape Fear Community College last January 7 … Only one other time in Moore's time as coach has the team had 60 or more rebounds in a game – 60 versus Tidewater Community College on Dec. 13, 2013.

 

SHOCK BLOCKERS: With an average of 5.3 blocks per game, RBC ranks 19th best in the country in NJCAA Division II.

LEADER OF THE BLOCK: Wooten leads the Statesmen in blocks with 41 (3.2 bpg), which is 3rd best in NJCAA Division II … He had a season high seven blocks against Pitt.
 

VIRGINIA STRONG: Ten of the players on the RBC roster hail from Virginia.

ABOUT THE CARDINALS: CCBC Catonsivlle (3-10) is coming off a 67-58 victory over Mercer County College on Saturday … The team is led in scoring by freshman guard Montague Wright (19.1 ppg) and in rebounding by freshman forward Douglas Farley (5.3 rpg) … The team averages 78.4 points a game and allows 67.8 points a game.
 

WHAT'S NEXT: Tonight's game marks the close of first semester games … The Statesmen will be off until Jan. 8, 2016 when they travel to Walters State for a 7:00 p.m. game.
