SATURDAY BASKETBALL LEADS STATESMEN TO CAPE FEAR

PETERSBURG, Va., (Jan. 15.  2016) – While the Richard Bland College men's basketball team is in the midst of a heavy Region X Conference schedule, the slate does still future non-conference contests. One of those happens on Saturday, Jan. 16, when the Statesmen travel to Division I Cape Fear Community College for a 3:00 p.m. game.

Richard Bland (8-8, 4-3) is looking to rebound from an up-and-down contest against No. 10 nationally-ranked Louisburg College on Wednesday evening. The road-tested Statesmen will be playing their 11th road game of the 2015-16 season and 5th against a Division I team.

LAST SEASON VS. CAPE FEAR: Played on Jan. 7, 2015 in Petersburg, the Statesmen earned an 87-82 victory, their tenth straight of the season … RBC defeated Cape Fear 90-81 in the 2013-14 season.
 

NATIONAL RANKING: When playing Louisburg on Wednesday, the Statesmen were facing its second nationally-ranked team … In the latest NJCAA Division II poll, Patrick Henry is ranked No. 15 and Bryant & Stratton was among five teams receiving votes for a national ranking … On the Division I side, the Statesmen have played two ranked opponents, Northwest Florida State College and Harcum College.

 

NON-CONFERENCE GAMES: In RBC's six home and six away games, the cumulative statistics are similar in most categories except for rebounding and points scored, where the Statesmen average more points (82.0 ppg) and grab more rebounds (50.2 rpg) in away contest than at home.

 

OFF THE BENCH: Freshman guard Jordan Griggs came off the RBC bench against Louisburg to lead the team in scoring with 17 points on 6-11 shooting from the field and 4-7 from behind the arc … It was Griggs' sixth double figures scoring effort of the season … He scored a career-high 25 points in an 84-82 victory over Essex County College on Nov. 6.

 
FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES: Four players who began the 2015-16 season average in double figures … Sophomore Troy Gibson leads the team (13.9 ppg), followed by sophomore Devin Smith (12.0) and freshman guards Jordan Griggs (10.4) and Gevon Arrington (10.1).  

 

SOPHOMORE LEADERSHIP: Gibson, the lone returner from last year's National Championship team, put in another yeoman's effort against Louisburg, scoring 13 points and adding 10 rebounds … It was Gibson's 13th time scoring in double figures and 4th double figures rebounding game … On the season, it was his fourth time registering a double-double.

 

SECOND SEMESTER ADDITIONS: The Statesmen welcomed two sophomore additions, both Richmond natives, to the lineup for the second half of the season ... The first is 6-6 guard Reginald Moses, who averaged 13 points in 19 minutes as a member of last year's National Championship team … The second is 6-0 guard Gerard Dean-McBride who played at Virginia Union two seasons ago … In his debut game against Walters State, Dean-McBride led RBC in scoring with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field … His performance earned him RBC Student-Athlete of the Week honors. 

 

STRONG REBOUNDERS: Against Lenoir Community College on Nov. 18, the Statesmen hauled in 61 rebounds, tying a mark of 61 set against Cape Fear Community College last January 7 … Only one other time in Moore's time as coach has the team had 60 or more rebounds in a game – 60 versus Tidewater Community College on Dec. 13, 2013.

 
ABOUT THE SEA DEVILS: Cape Fear has won five straight games, including an 88-49 victory over the St. Andrews University JV on Tuesday … The Sea Devils have five players scoring in double figures, led by TJ Evans (14.8), Michael Chambers (13.4), Alonzo Tyson (12.8), Tyrek Coger (12.8) and Calvin Davis (10.9) … DeVarte Watson leads the team in rebounding (8.7)
 

WHAT'S NEXT: The Statesmen will return home to play back-to-back games … On Wednesday, Jan. 16 RBC will host Pitt Community College at 7 p.m., which is Faculty/Staff Appreciation Game on campus … On Saturday, RBC will host Lenoir C.C. at 3 p.m., which is the Hall of Fame/Alumni Day game … On Monday, Cape Fear hosts the Elite Skills Basketball Academy at 2:30 p.m.
