STATESMEN TO HOST LENOIR IN OPENING ROUND OF REGION X TOURNAMENT

PETERSBURG, VA., (Feb. 23, 2016) – There are no secrets for the Richard Bland College men's basketball team as it prepares for the Region X Conference Tournament.

The Statesmen (14-16, 8-10) know where they'll be playing: Richard Bland hosts the Tournament at Statesman Hall on Feb. 27-28, with games starting on Saturday at Noon.

The Statesmen know when they play: Saturday at 4 p.m.

Finally, the No. 7 seeded Statesmen know who they'll be playing: No. 10 seed Lenoir Community College. A victory propels Richard Bland into Sunday's quarterfinals against No. 2 seed Patrick Henry.

The Region X Tournament plays out this way: Saturday's games comprise No. 8 Wake Tech (7-11) vs. No. 9 Vance-Granville (4-13) at Noon; No. 6 Pasco-Hernando vs. 11 Guilford (1-17) at 2 p.m. and No. 7 Richard Bland (8-10) vs. No. 10 Lenoir (3-14) at 4 pm.

Sunday features a full slate of games when No. 4 seed Bryant & Stratton (13-5) meets No. 5 Pitt C.C. (9-8) at 10 a.m., followed by the Wake Tech/Vance-Granville winner playing No. 1 Louisburg (15-2) at Noon.  The 2 p.m. game features No. 3 Catawba (14-4) against the Pasco-Hernando/Guilford Tech (1-7) winner. Florida-based Pasco-Hernando competes in the Region X Tournament due to geographic alignment.  The 4 p.m. Sunday game offers No. 2 Patrick Henry (14-4) vs. the winner of Lenoir and Richard Bland.

The semifinals and finals will be played on March 4-5 at Sandhills, N.C.

Tickets for the Region X Conference Tournament are $10 for adults and $7 for senior citizens, military and kids.

The Statesmen captured last year's Region X Conference Tournament by defeating host Louisburg, 80-77, on March 7, 2015. That victory propelled Richard Bland to the NJCAA Division II National Championship over John Wood Community College, 64-53, in Danville, Illinois.

Richard Bland won both games against Lenoir Community College this season, defeating the Lancers, 75-60, behind a 20-point, 10 rebound effort from Petersburg's Gevon Arrington on Nov. 18 in Kingston, N.C.  On Jan. 31 in Petersburg, the Statesmen played unselfish basketball in earning a season-best 29 assists on 37 made field goals en route to an 88-60 victory.

The Statesmen filled the statistical sheet with superlatives, shooting 54 percent for the game, outrebounding its opponent 45-26 and committing a season low nine turnovers in the victory.

A win over Lenoir pits Richard Bland against No. 2 seed Patrick Henry, a team that narrowly defeated the Statesmen 95-88 in overtime on Jan. 27 in Petersburg and 68-64 on Feb. 17 at Patrick Henry.
 

AGAINST LENOIR: The Statesmen have averaged 81.5 points a game and allowed 60 points … In the two games, RBC has shot 48 percent from the floor, Lenoir has shot 39 percent … RBC has held a commanding edge in rebounding, averaging 42.5 rebounds a game compared to 24.0 for Lenoir … Arrington has averaged a team-best 16.5 in two games against the Lancers ... Lenoir is led by sophomore guard Davon Edwards who averages 17.8 ppg and freshman guard Gianpaolo Riccio who averages 14.4 ppg ... Riccio is the team leader in rebounding at 4.3 ppg ... On the season, Lenoir averages 78.1 ppg and allows 83.4 ppg ... Lenoir averages 30.1 rebounds a game and the opposition rebounds at 38.1 rpg.

AGAINST PATRICK HENRY: The Statesmen have averaged 76 points a game and the Patriots have averaged 81.5 points a game … In the two games, RBC has shot 40 percent from the field and Patrick Henry has shot 43 percent … RBC has averaged 35.0 rebounds a game, Patrick Henry 42.0 rebounds … Devin Smith has averaged a team-best 13 points a game against the Patriots ... Patrick Henry is led by sophomore guard Jarel Jennings who averages 11.7 ppg and freshman guard Keyshawn Johnson at 10.2 ppg ... Sophomore forward Shawn Duhon leads the team in rebounding at 7.5 rpg ... Patrick Henry averages 76.3 points a game and allows 63.7 ppg ... Off the boards, the Patriots average 35.6 rpg, opponents 29.3 rpg.
 

ABOUT RICHARD BLAND: Sophomore Troy Gibson leads RBC in scoring at 14.6 ppg  … Fellow sophomore forward Devin Smith averages 13.1 … Sophomore guard Reginald Moses averages 11.7 points off the bench.

OFF THE BACKBOARD: Gibson leads the Statesmen in rebounding (7.4 rgg) followed by Arrington (4.9) and McBride (4.3).

AT HOME: The Statesmen are 9-4 at Statesman Hall this season.

PLAYING BACK-TO-BACK: Should Richard Bland advance to Sunday's quarterfinal game against Patrick Henry, it would be the fifth time this season the Statesmen played back-to-back games.
