GIBSON, SMITH EARN ALL REGION X CONFERENCE HONORS

PETERSBURG, Va., (Feb. 27, 2016) – Sophomore's Troy Gibson and Devin Smith, bookend forwards who have led the Statesmen in scoring and rebounding throughout the 2015-16 season, have been named to the Region X Conference First and Second Teams respectively.

 

Gibson, from Newport News, VA., averaged a team best 14.6 points and 7.6 rebounds a game. He started in each of the 27 games he played, shooting 47 percent from the filed. During the 2015-16 season, Gibson scored in double figures in 23 of 27 games, including 13 games with 15 of more points. He had a five game stretch in games from Jan. 20 against Pitt C.C. to Feb. 6 against Catawba, where he averaged 18.5 points a game and shot 55 percent from the field. He scored a career-high 25 points against Harcum College at the Essex County Tournament on Nov. 7, 2015.

 

Gibson led the Statesmen in rebounding, grabbing a career-best 12 against Harcum and snaring double digits in seven games. He averaged nine minutes a game as a reserve on the 2014-15 NJCAA Division II National Championship team.

 

Smith, who started in 20 of 24 games this season after transferring from Hagerstown Junior College, averaged 13.1 points a game, second best on the team. He shot 46 percent from the field and contributed 2.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. He scored in double figures in 17 games, including a career-high of 27 points against nationally-ranked Potomac State. In a four game stretch from Jan. 27 against Patrick Henry to Feb. 3 against Catawba Valley, Smith averaged 20.7 points a game and shot 65 percent from the field.

 

Smith is a 2014 graduate of Randallstown High School in Randallstown, MD, where he earned three varsity letters. He attended Hagerstown Junior College in 2014-15 season. As a scholastic, Smith was a First-Team All-Baltimore County selection and as a senior averaged 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He was also a McDonalds All-American nominee. At Hagerstown he was an All-Region selection and averaged 13.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 2.1 assists per game.
