SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College will play on the road at Wake Technical (N.C.) Community College in its Region X Conference men's basketball opener on Tuesday night, November 22, in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Statesmen, ranked No. 14 in the NJCAA Division II Preseason Poll, have a record of 6-2 overall, while the Eagles are 4-1 overall, 2-0 in Region X. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

Scouting the Statesmen
No. 14 Richard Bland is 6-2 after winning two games during the Richard Bland Classic this past weekend, defeating Southside Virginia Community College 118-71 on Nov. 18 and NJCAA Division I No. 18 Cape Fear (N.C.) Community College 78-72 on Nov. 19. The Statesmen, who are an outstanding 80-27 (.748) over the past three-plus seasons, are coached by head coach Chuck Moore, who is in his fourth season, and assisted by fourth-year assistant coach Brian Henderson, second-year assistant coach Preston Beverly and first-year graduate assistant coach Mike Wynn. Through eight games, the Statesmen have been led in scoring by 6-9 sophomore center Jaquan Wooten/Kinston, North Carolina, who is averaging 12.4 points (73.1 FG%), 9.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks with five double-doubles. He is followed by 6-4 sophomore guard Deandre Clark/Orange, who is averaging 11.5 points with 18 three-point field goals (2.3), while local 6-3 sophomore guard Gevon Arrington/Petersburg is averaging 10.3 points and 5.5 rebounds. Richard Bland is averaging 80.9 points per game, while allowing 68.4 points to opponents.

Scouting Wake Tech
Wake Tech is 4-1 overall, 2-0 in Region X, and coached by first-year head coach Adam Wainwright. The high-scoring Eagles are averaging 92.2 points per game, including a 106-101 home win past Central Carolina (S.C.) Technical College on Nov. 19. Wake Tech has three players averaging double-figure points, including sophomores Camryn Fort (19.5), Josh Siler (13.7) and Sam Johnson (12.3).

Series History
Richard Bland and Wake Tech have played seven times previously in the sport of men's basketball, and the Statesmen lead the series, 4-3. The Eagles, however, did win the most recent contest played at the end of last season, 79-75, on February 20, 2016 in North Carolina. The Statesmen had won the first meeting last year, 92-89, on December 13, 2015 in Statesman Hall.

2015 NJCAA Division II National Champions
Richard Bland won the 2015 NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship, defeating John Wood (Ill.) Community College 64-53 on March 21, 2015 at the Mary Miller Gymnasium on the campus of Danville Community College in Danville, Illinois. The Statesmen finished their memorable storybook 2014-15 campaign with a school-record of 32-4, winning the national title in only their second year back in action following a 20-year hiatus from competitive sports at Richard Bland College.

Richard Bland will take a few days off this week for the Thanksgiving Holiday before again playing on the road at Region X member Pitt (N.C.) Community College next Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. in Winterville, North Carolina (near Greenville and East Carolina University). The Statesmen return home to Statesman Hall to host Region X member Catawba Valley (N.C.) Community College on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 3 p.m.  The game has been designated Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) & Family Day and will feature a Canned Food Drive, as well.
