No. 13 Richard Bland Welcomes Guilford Tech (N.C.) On Saturday

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College welcomes Region X Conference member Guilford Technical (N.C.) Community College to Statesman Hall on Saturday, December 10 at 3 p.m. The Statesmen, ranked No. 13 in this week's NJCAA Division II Top 20 Poll, have won five-straight games and feature an overall record of 9-2, while unbeaten at 3-0 in Region X. The Titans are 5-7 overall, 1-2 in Region X. The contest has been designated Jacob's Ladder Reunion while also celebrating Wounded Warrior Project® Day. The game can be heard locally on WHAP Radio, Fox Sports 1340 AM.

Scouting the Statesmen
No. 13 Richard Bland is 9-2 overall after defeating Region X opponent Catawba Valley (N.C.) Community College 89-66 on Dec. 3 at Statesman Hall. The Statesmen, who are an outstanding 83-27 (.755) over the past three-plus seasons, are coached by head coach Chuck Moore, who is in his fourth season, and assisted by fourth-year assistant coach Brian Henderson, second-year assistant coach Preston Beverly and first-year graduate assistant coach Mike Wynn.

Through 11 games, Richard Bland has been led in scoring by local 6-3 sophomore guard Gevon Arrington/Petersburg, who is averaging 12.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists. He is followed by 6-9 sophomore center Jaquan Wooten/Kinston, North Carolina, who is averaging 11.8 points (66.7 FG%), 9.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks with six double-doubles, while 6-4 sophomore guard Deandre Clark/Orange is averaging 10.6 points (23 3FGs) and 3.5 rebounds. Richard Bland is averaging 81.5 points per game, while allowing just 67.6 points to opponents for a scoring margin of +13.9.

Scouting Guilford Tech
Guilford Tech is 5-7 overall, 1-2 in Region X, and coached by head coach Kirk Chandler. The Titans are averaging 68.3 points per game, while yielding 79.5 points following their most recent contest ... a 95-85 home loss to Region X member Patrick Henry Community College on Dec. 7. GTCC has been led in scoring by the freshmen trio of Tamario Rodgers (16.6), Eric Peaks (12.5) and Jaylan Terry (12.4).

Richard Bland and Guilford Tech have played six times previously in the sport of men's basketball, and the Statesmen have never lost to the Titans, leading the series, 6-0. Richard Bland won the two games played last season by scores of 76-60 on December 12, 2015 in Statesman Hall and 90-68 on January 30, 2016 in North Carolina.

Jacob's Ladder Reunion/Wounded Warrior Project® Day
The Richard Bland athletics department enjoyed the privilege of spending time with members of Jacob's Ladder this past July during the proactive summer enrichment program for intellectually gifted children who face obstacles to success. While they participated in a diverse offering of academic and cultural programs throughout the four-week program on the Richard Bland campus, Statesmen coaches and men's basketball student-athletes led them in athletic and recreational activities for an hour daily.

More than 52,000 service members have been physically wounded during the military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. An estimated 400,000 are living with the invisible wounds of war, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Richard Bland is honored to have Wounded Warrior Project® veterans attend this men's basketball game.

2015 NJCAA Division II National Champions
Richard Bland won the 2015 NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship, defeating John Wood (Ill.) Community College 64-53 on March 21, 2015 at the Mary Miller Gymnasium on the campus of Danville Community College in Danville, Illinois. The Statesmen finished their most memorable storybook 2014-15 campaign with a school-record of 32-4, winning the national title in only their second year back in action following a 20-year hiatus from competitive sports at Richard Bland College.
