Richard Bland Names Gevon Arrington Athlete of the Week

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College local sophomore men's basketball guard Gevon Arrington/Petersburg has been named the Athletics Department's Athlete of the Week for the period December 7-13. The former Petersburg High School standout led the Statesmen to a pair of wins last week, averaging 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Arrington had 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals during a 103-67 home win past Guilford Technical (N.C.) Community College on Dec. 10. He scored a team-high 17 points, including 3-4 three-point field goals, adding six rebounds, two assists and three steals during a 64-63 road win at CCBC Catonsville (Md.) on Dec. 12. Arrington leads Richard Bland (12-2, 5-0 Region X), ranked No. 9 in this week's NJCAA Division II Top 20 Poll, with his scoring average of 12.4 points, adding 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

Gevon, who has received interest from NCAA Division II members Lincoln (Pa.) University and the University of Mount Olive (N.C.) among others, will be recognized at the next home game against Fayetteville Technical (N.C.) Community College on Saturday, January 7, at 2 p.m. at Statesman Hall. Admission is free to all Statesmen Athletics events, and Petersburg area residents and Petersburg High School students are encouraged to attend in support of their local graduate.

Q: How does it feel to be named Richard Bland Athlete of the Week?
GA: It feels good, really good.

Q: How did you get started in your sport and how long have you played?
GA: I got started playing at the Virginia Avenue park in Petersburg, just being at the park my myself. I've been playing basketball since my 10th grade year in high school.

Q: What do you like most about your team?
GA: We have a real bond that goes beyond basketball.

Q: Who is your funniest teammate/why?
GA: Harrison (Mitchell), because he is naturally funny. He doesn't try to be funny, it just happens.

Q: Do you have any pregame rituals/superstitions?
GA: The only thing I do before a game is talk to my son or look at pictures of him.

Q: What is your favorite place on campus/why?
GA: The Café, because I love to eat and I like to socialize.

Q: What is your favorite class/professor/why?
GA: Sociology and Olivia Pryor (Adjunct Instructor of Sociology). She keeps it real with us and encourages us to say how we really feel about situations.
