No. 6 Richard Bland Travels To Guilford Tech (N.C.) On Saturday

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College travels to play at Region X Conference member Guilford Technical (N.C.) Community College in men's basketball on Saturday, January 28 at 3 p.m. in Jamestown, North Carolina.  The nationally-ranked Statesmen, No. 6 in this week's NJCAA Division II Top 20 Poll, feature an overall record of 17-3, including 10-1 in Region X, having won four-straight games and 13 of their last 14.  The Titans are 6-14 overall, 3-8 in Region X.  Richard Bland won the first meeting between the two schools this season, defeating GTCC 103-67 back on December 10, 2016 in Statesman Hall.

Scouting the Statesmen
No. 6 Richard Bland is 17-3 overall after an 83-61 road win at rival Patrick Henry Community College on Jan. 25.  The Statesmen, who are an outstanding 91-28 (.765) over the past four seasons, are coached by head coach Chuck Moore, who is in his fourth season, and assisted by fourth-year assistant coach Brian Henderson, second-year assistant coach Preston Beverly and first-year graduate assistant coach Mike Wynn.

Through 20 games, Richard Bland has been led in scoring by local 6-3 sophomore guard Gevon Arrington/Petersburg, who is averaging 12.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists.  He is followed by 6-4 sophomore guard Deandre Clark/Orange, who is averaging 12.1 points (52 3FGs), 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists, while 6-9 sophomore center Jaquan Wooten/Kinston, North Carolina is averaging 11.7 points (66 FG%), 9.2 rebounds and 3.2 blocks with eight double-doubles.  Richard Bland is averaging 83.1 points per game, while allowing just 67.4 points to opponents for a scoring margin of +15.7.

Scouting Guilford Tech
Guilford Tech is 6-14 overall after an 89-61 road loss at Patrick Henry on Jan. 23, and is coached by Kirk Chandler.  The Titans have three players averaging double-figure points, including freshmen Tamario Rodgers (16.6), Eric Peaks (13.4) and TJ Watkins (11.1).  GTCC averages 73.6 points, while allowing 84.3 points for a scoring margin of -10.7.

Series History
Richard Bland and Guilford Tech have played seven times previously in the sport of men's basketball, and the Statesmen have never lost to the Titans, leading the series, 7-0.  As mentioned, Richard Bland won the earlier game this season at home by 36 points (103-67, 12/10/16).  Deandre Clark led the Statesmen with 16 points, followed by Jaquan Wooten (12), freshman Deon Joyner/North Charleston, South Carolina (11) and Gevon Arrington (10).  Tamario Rodgers scored a game-high 24 points for GTCC.

Up Next
Richard Bland will return home to host Lenoir (N.C.) Community College next Wednesday, February 1 at 7 p.m., the first of seven home games at Statesman Hall during the month of February.  The Lenoir contest has been designated as the program's Coaches vs. Cancer Suits & Sneakers / Pink Out contest to raise awareness about the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission, and to promote the American Cancer Society as a place for help and support.  The Statesmen coaching staff will wear sneakers with their game attire as a visible reminder about the importance of nutrition and physical activity in reducing cancer risk.
