Preston Beverly Appointed To MOAA Board Of Directors

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College Assistant Athletics Director Preston Beverly has been appointed to The Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) Board of Directors.  Administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), MOAA promotes equitable employment opportunities for minorities in the athletics industry through the exchange of ideas, the creation of networking opportunities and the avocation of an increase in employment for minorities in athletics administration positions at all levels of the sports industry.  The only appointee from a two-year college, he will serve a minimum three-year term, beginning after the 2017 Symposium scheduled during the annual NACDA Convention, June 10-12, in Orlando, Florida.

"I'm very appreciative of this opportunity," said Beverly.  "Joining the MOAA Board as the first representative from a Junior College is a humbling experience.  I'm very happy to earn this recognition for Richard Bland College of William and Mary, and I look forward to working hard on behalf of the MOAA membership."

Beverly is in his second year as the assistant AD and an assistant men's basketball coach at Richard Bland.  A former power forward at Virginia Military Institute, he coached at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine and the State University of New York at New Paltz, before serving as the director of athletics and head men's basketball coach at Lincoln College of New England in Southington, Connecticut.  Preston will be the second member of the Beverly family to serve on MOAA's Board of Directors, as his mother Sharon is a Past President of the organization.

Beverly will be joined by fellow newcomers Carlyle Carter, Dena Freeman-Patton, TJ Shelton and Timothy Wise.  Carter serves as the Executive Director and CEO of the California Community College Athletic Association.  Freeman-Patton is the deputy athletics director at California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB). She also is on the MOAA membership committee.  Shelton, the assistant athletics director for sports administration at The Ohio State University, oversees the men's and women's swimming, diving, cross country, track and field, wrestling and lacrosse programs, as well as field hockey and synchronized swimming.  Wise is in his fifth year as senior associate athletics director for facilities and event operations at the University of Miami.

These five new members will join the following Executive Committee and Board members for MOAA in 2017-18.  The Executive Committee will serve the first of their two-year term immediately following the Symposium - President Peggy Davis, director of athletics at Virginia State University, Vice President China Jude, assistant vice president/athletics at Queens College, and At-Large members Ed Scott, director of athletics at Morgan State University and Carla Wilson, director of athletics at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. MOAA Executive Director Stan Johnson, president of Stan Johnson & Associates also serves on the Executive Committee.

The following is a complete list of the Board - Kevin Anderson, director of athletics at University of Maryland; Renee Bostic, director of athletics and intramurals at Medgar Evers College; Cora Brumley, commissioner at the Little East Conference; Brandon Martin, director of athletics at California State University Northridge; Renae Myles, senior associate AD for internal operations at Winthrop University; and Gloria Nevarez, senior associate commissioner/SWA at the Pac-12 Conference.

MOAA also promotes cultivating a sports environment that supports the values necessary to accept aspiring professionals from all walks of life.  For more information on the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, please visit www.moaaweb.com.
