Richard Bland Names Jaquan Wooten Athlete of the Week (Again)

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College sophomore men's basketball standout center Jaquan Wooten/Kinston, North Carolina has been named the Athletics Department's Athlete of the Week for the period February 22-28.  He led the Statesmen to a 2-0 week with his double-double average of 29.5 points and 12.5 rebounds, adding 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks, while shooting 83% (25-30) from the field and 69% (9-13) at the free throw line.  This is the second time that Wooten has been selected for the weekly honor, as he previously garnered the award for the period November 9-15, 2016.

Wooten posted career-highs of 42 points (18-22 FGs, 6-9 FTs) and 17 rebounds during a 94-86 home win past Wake Technical (N.C.) on Feb. 25, adding two steals and two blocks.  The 42 points are a new program record since Richard Bland reinstated basketball in 2013, surpassing the 41 points scored by Reginald Moses against Pitt (N.C.) on January 21, 2015.  Wooten had 17 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks during a 101-71 home win past Vance-Granville (N.C.) on Feb. 22.

Through 29 games, Wooten leads Richard Bland (25-4, 17-2), ranked No. 8 in the latest NJCAA Division II Top 20 Poll, with his 12.9 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks.  He shoots a team-best 66% (146-222) from the field and 50% (81-161) at the line, adding 26 steals and 18 assists.

Wooten has received interest from NCAA Division I Sam Houston State University as well as Division II members Lincoln (Pa.) University, Salem International (W.Va.) University and Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University, among others.
