Richard Bland Names Gevon Arrington Athlete of the Week

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College local sophomore men's basketball standout guard Gevon Arrington/Petersburg has been named the Athletics Department's Athlete of the Week for the period March 8-14.  He led the Statesmen to a pair of big wins last weekend en route to Richard Bland winning the Region 10 Tournament Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina.  This is the second-straight week that Arrington has been selected for the weekly honor, and the fourth time this year that he has garnered the award, including for the periods December 7-13, February 1-7 and March 1-7.

Arrington led nationally-ranked No. 8 Richard Bland with 21 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal during the 70-61 semifinal victory past Patrick Henry Community College on March 10, and followed with 19 points, six rebounds, one assist and two steals during the 78-75 championship overtime triumph past nationally-ranked No. 3 Louisburg College on March 11.  Arrington sent the game to overtime with his tying three-point field goal with 19 seconds on the clock as the contest was tied at 66-66 after 40 minutes. 

Richard Bland has earned the No. 5 seed for the 2017 NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship, March 21-25, at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Illinois.  The Statesmen (28-4) will play Cincinnati State (Ohio) (26-7) in the first round of the national tournament on Tuesday night, March 21 at 9:30 p.m. ET.  The game will be streamed live on njcaatv.com

Through 32 games, Arrington leads the team in scoring with his 13.2 points, adding 5.7 rebounds (second), 2.6 assists (third) and 1.1 steals (fourth), along with 38 three-point field goals (second).  He is playing a team-best 25.1 minutes, while shooting 50% (152-307) from the field (second), including 36% (38-107) on three-pointers (third), and a team-best 73% (79-109) at the free throw line.
