SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College men's basketball head coach Chuck Moore has been named the 2017 NJCAA Division II, District 15 Coach of the Year, while sophomore Jaquan Wooten/Kinston, North Carolina was selected to the All-Tournament Team for the recently concluded 2017 NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship.
Moore led Richard Bland to an overall record of 30-6, including the District 15, Region 10 Tournament Championship after completing the Region 10 regular season as runners-up with a record of 17-2. The Statesmen just concluded their second NJCAA DII National Tournament appearance in three years with a fourth-place finish among 123 NJCAA DII men's basketball programs. Richard Bland has now attained a four-year record of 104-31 (.770) since men's basketball was reinstated at the College in 2013, following a 20-year hiatus from competitive sports at the College.
Moore previously was the 2015 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) National Junior College Coach of the Year, the 2015 Spalding NJCAA Division II Coach of the Year, the 2015 NJCAA District 6 Coach of the Year, the 2015 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division Coach of the Year and the 2009 Region 10 Coach of the Year.
Wooten averaged 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds during the four games played at the National Tournament. The 6-9 standout added four assists and four steals, and was credited with two blocks, while shooting 75% (21-28) from the field and 44% (8-18) at the free throw line. Wooten's best game was against South Suburban (Ill.) in the consolation contest, finishing with 16 points (6-7 FGs, 4-8 FTs), five rebounds, one assist, two steals and two blocks in 31 minutes. Through 36 games, Wooten averaged 12.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks, adding 32 steals and 22 assists. He shot 66% (178-270) from the field and 51% (100-197) at the free throw line. The All-Region 10 First Team choice is one of three region nominees for All-American consideration, which will be announced soon.
