Richard Bland Names Jaquan Wooten Athlete of the Week

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College sophomore men's basketball standout Jaquan Wooten/Kinston, North Carolina has been named the Athletics Department's Athlete of the Week for the period March 22-28.  He was selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2017 NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship the concluded March 25.  This is the third time that Wooten has been selected for the weekly honor, as he previously garnered the award for the periods November 9-15, 2016 and February 22-28.

Wooten averaged 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds during the four games played at the National Tournament.  The 6-9 standout added four assists and four steals, and was credited with two blocks, while shooting 75% (21-28) from the field and 44% (8-18) at the free throw line.  Wooten's best game was against South Suburban (Ill.) in the consolation contest on March 25, finishing with 16 points (6-7 FGs, 4-8 FTs), five rebounds, one assist, two steals and two blocks in 31 minutes.

Through the 36-game campaign, Wooten averaged 12.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks, adding 32 steals and 22 assists.  He shot 66% (178-270) from the field and 51% (100-197) at the free throw line.  He posted season-highs of 42 points vs. Wake Tech (N.C.) (2/25), 18 rebounds vs. Patrick Henry (3/10), six blocks four times, most recent vs. Patrick Henry (3/10), three steals two times, most recent vs. Vance-Granville (N.C.) (2/22), three assists at Wake Tech (N.C.) (11/22) and 32 minutes at Monroe (N.Y.) (11/13).  Wooten had 25 double-figure scoring games, including the one 40-point game among two 20-point games and 14 double-figure rebounding games with 12 double-doubles.

Wooten helped Richard Bland to an overall record of 30-6, including the District 15, Region 10 Tournament Championship after completing the Region 10 regular season as runners-up with a record of 17-2.  The Statesmen just concluded their second NJCAA DII National Tournament appearance in three years with a fourth-place finish among 123 NJCAA DII men's basketball programs.  The All-Region 10 First Team selection is one of three region nominees for All-American consideration, which will be announced soon.

Wooten is receiving some NCAA Division I interest, while also considering offers from Division II members Lincoln (Pa.) University, Salem International (W.Va.) University, the University of Mount Olive (N.C.), Elizabeth City (N.C.) State University, Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) University and Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University.
