Statesmen Fall Twice While On The Road

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA -- The Richard Bland College of William & Mary men's basketball team traveled to Walterboro, South Carolina, and Denmark, South Carolina this past Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday night the Statesmen lost to the USC Salkehatchie Indians 90-54.

The Indians came out hot behind the arc and stayed hot throughout the night. The Statesmen fought hard to keep the game close. With six minutes remaining in the first half, the Indians led 22-16. Salkehatchie took advantage of a turnover by the Statesmen to hit a quick three. In the second half, USC Salkehatchie continued a great shooting performance to take the win over the Statesmen. The Statesmen fell to 4-8 on the season while the Indians improved to 10-6.

From Walterboro, the Statesmen traveled to Denmark, South Carolina to face the Denmark Technical College Panthers. It was tough a back and forth game the entire night between the Panthers and Statesmen. At halftime, the Panthers led by two with a score of 39-37. Freshman Ryan Jones led all scorers with 23 points and helped the Statesmen keep the game close up until the final seconds of the game. Richard Bland found themselves down four points with 25 seconds left to go by a score of 68-64. After a quick layup by sophomore Marvin Trotman to bring the score to 68-66 the Panthers threw a quick full-court inbound pass for an easy layup to put make the score 70-66. After a late missed three-point attempt by Jones and a quick foul by Richard Bland, the Panthers went to the line with 1.6 seconds to go. The final score was 71-66. The Panthers improved to 5-4 while Richard Bland falls to 4-9 on the season.

The Statesmen are back home on Monday, January 14 for a 7 pm tipoff to face Tennessee Prep for a game in support of the Wounded Warriors Project (WWP).
