NEW UPDATE | Richard Bland Hosts USC Sumter Thursday At 5 p.m.

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College has postponed the scheduled men's soccer match against USC Sumter on Wednesday, September 6, and rescheduled the contest against the Fire Ants for Thursday afternoon, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m. at the Statesman Soccer Field.  It's the third of four-straight home contests to open the campaign for the unbeaten Statesmen (3-0) versus the visiting Fire Ants (1-0).  USC Sumter is fielding a men's soccer program for the first time since 2011.

Scouting the Statesmen
Richard Bland is 3-0 overall, including 3-0 in Region X, following a 4-1 home victory past USC Salkehatchie on Sept. 3.  The Statesmen are coached by fourth-year head coach Eduardo de Souza, and assisted by second-year assistant coach Nick Surkamp.  Richard Bland has been led in scoring by freshman Davi Girardi/São Paulo, Brazil with four goals, including two game-winners, totaling eight points.  Sophomores Dusan Stankovic/Belgrade, Serbia and Hussein Osman/Charlottesville each have two goals and four points, while sophomore Jamie McAvoy/Ayr, Scotland has three assists for three points.  Classmate and keeper Tomás Fonseca/Torres Vedras, Portugal has started all three matches and played the entire 270 minutes with one shutout, a 0.67 goals against average and four saves for a save percentage of .667 percent.

Series History
Richard Bland and USC Sumter are meeting for the first-time ever in the sport of men's soccer.  The Statesmen fielded their first team in 2013, while the Fire Ants last played the sport during 2011.

2016 NJCAA Region X Tournament Champions
Richard Bland completed 2016 with the finest season in the four-year history of the program, posting a final overall record of 12-7-2, including its first-ever Region X Tournament Championship and advancing to the NJCAA Division I Southeast District Tournament semifinals.

Richard Bland will conclude its early-season homestand at the Statesman Soccer Field with a match against Region X opponent Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.) on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 4 p.m.  The Statesmen will play on the road for the first time this season with a pair of Region X contests next week, including at Cape Fear Community College on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. in Wilmington, North Carolina and at in-state rival Patrick Henry Community College on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 3 p.m. in Martinsville.
