SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- No. 16 Richard Bland College welcomes Cape Fear (N.C.) Community College for a Region X men's soccer match on Tuesday afternoon, October 10, at 4 p.m. at the Statesman Soccer Field.  The nationally-ranked Statesmen have a record of 13-1 overall, including 11-1 in Region X, while the visiting Sea Devils have a record of 7-3 overall, 6-3 in Region X.  Richard Bland has already established a school record for season wins (13).

Scouting the Statesmen
Richard Bland posted its school-record 13th win during a 9-1 home victory past in-state and Region X rival Patrick Henry Community College on Oct. 7.  The Statesmen, enjoying their highest-ever national ranking at No. 16, have now been ranked among the Top 20 in the NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer Poll during four-straight weeks.  Richard Bland is coached by fourth-year head coach Eduardo de Souza, and assisted by second-year assistant coach Nick Surkamp.  The Statesmen have attained three consecutive 10-win seasons under the guidance of de Souza (40-29-5).

Richard Bland is led in scoring by freshman Davi Girardi/São Paulo, Brazil with 13 goals, including six game-winners, and six assists totaling 32 points.  Freshman Uziel Hernandez/The Villages, Florida adds 10 goals (four game-winners) and seven assists for 27 points, followed by sophomores Hussein Osman/Charlottesville (eight goals, six assists, 22 points) and Dusan Stankovic/Belgrade, Serbia (eight goals, two assists, 18 points).  Sophomore keeper Tomás Fonseca/Torres Vedras, Portugal has started 13 matches and played 1091 minutes in front of the net with six shutouts, an impressive 0.66 goals against average (only eight goals allowed) and 32 saves for a save percentage of .800 percent.

Among the National Leaders
Richard Bland ranks fifth in NJCAA Division I goals against average (0.70, 10 goals allowed), is tied for 10th in goals (55), and tied for 11th in points (160) and assists (50).  Tomás Fonseca is tied for third nationally in shutouts (6), is 10th in goals against average (0.66), 32nd in save percentage (.800) and tied for 35th in goals allowed (8).  Davi Girardi is tied for third nationally in game-winning goals (6), tied for 24th in points (32) and tied for 27th in goals (13).  Uziel Hernandez is tied for 14th nationally in game-winning goals (4), tied for 41st in points (27), tied for 45th in goals (10) and tied for 47th in assists (7).

Series History
Richard Bland and Cape Fear are meeting for the 11th time in the sport of men's soccer, and the Statesmen lead the all-time series, 6-4, including six-straight wins against the Sea Devils.  Richard Bland won the first meeting this season at Cape Fear by a score of 1-0 on September 12.

2016 NJCAA Region X Tournament Champions
Richard Bland completed 2016 with the finest season in the four-year history of the program, posting a final overall record of 12-7-2, including its first-ever Region X Tournament Championship and advancing to the NJCAA Division I Southeast District Tournament semifinals in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Richard Bland will play on the road at Region X opponent Wake Technical (N.C.) Community College on Friday, Oct. 13, at 2:30 p.m. in Holly Springs, North Carolina.  The Statesmen will return home to play non-region member and nationally-ranked No. 17 Harcum (Pa.) College in the regular season finale on Monday, Oct. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Statesman Soccer Field.  The match against the Bears is designated as Sophomore Day for the eight Statesmen completing their eligibility.
