No. 15 Richard Bland Welcomes Cape Fear (N.C.) On Wednesday

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- No. 15 Richard Bland College welcomes Cape Fear (N.C.) Community College for a Region X men's soccer match on Wednesday afternoon, October 18, at 4 p.m. at the Statesman Soccer Field.  The nationally-ranked Statesmen have a record of 15-1 overall, including 12-1 in Region X, while the visiting Sea Devils have a record of 8-5 overall, 7-5 in Region X.  The re-scheduled match (from Oct. 10) is the regular season finale and has been designated as Sophomore Day for the eight Statesmen completing their eligibility.

Scouting the Statesmen
Richard Bland posted its school-record 15th win during a 1-0 home victory past No. 19 Harcum (Pa.) College on Oct. 16.  The Statesmen, enjoying their highest-ever national ranking at No. 15, have now been ranked among the Top 20 in the NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer Poll during six-straight weeks.  Richard Bland is coached by fourth-year head coach Eduardo de Souza, and assisted by second-year assistant coach Nick Surkamp.  The Statesmen have attained three consecutive 10-win seasons under the guidance of de Souza (42-29-5).

Richard Bland is led in scoring by freshman Davi Girardi/São Paulo, Brazil with 13 goals, including six game-winners, and six assists totaling 32 points.  Freshman Uziel Hernandez/The Villages, Florida adds 10 goals (four game-winners) and nine assists for 29 points, followed by sophomores Hussein Osman/Charlottesville (eight goals, six assists) and Dusan Stankovic/Belgrade, Serbia (10 goals, two assists) each with 22 points.  Sophomore keeper Tomás Fonseca/Torres Vedras, Portugal has started 15 matches and played 1271 minutes in front of the net with seven shutouts, an impressive 0.64 goals against average (only nine goals allowed) and 40 saves for a save percentage of .816 percent. 

Sophomore Day
Richard Bland will recognize its eight sophomores during a special pre-game ceremony, beginning at approximately 3:45 p.m. The eight Statesmen being honored include defender Finn Busse of Kiel, Germany, goalkeeper Tomás Fonseca of Torres Vedras, Portugal, midfielder Jamie McAvoy of Ayr, Scotland, midfielder Hussein Osman of Charlottesville, defender Andrew Skaer of South Riding, midfielder Dusan Stankovic of Belgrade, Serbia, midfielder Danny Torres of Bucaramanga, Colombia and midfielder Agustin Vassallo of Neuquen, Argentina.

Among the National Leaders
Richard Bland ranks fifth in NJCAA Division I goals against average (0.68, 10 goals allowed), 10th in goals (60) and points (174), and 11th in assists (54).  Tomás Fonseca is tied for second nationally in shutouts (7), ninth in goals against average (0.64), tied for 27th in save percentage (.816) and tied for 28th in goals allowed (9).  Davi Girardi is tied for fifth nationally in game-winning goals (6), tied for 34th in goals (13) and tied for 39th in points (32).  Uziel Hernandez is tied for 21st nationally in game-winning goals (4), tied for 33rd in assists (7) and tied for 50th in points (29).

Series History
Richard Bland and Cape Fear are meeting for the 11th time in the sport of men's soccer, and the Statesmen lead the all-time series, 6-4, including six-straight wins against the Sea Devils.

2016 NJCAA Region X Tournament Champions
Richard Bland completed 2016 with the finest season in the four-year history of the program, posting a final overall record of 12-7-2, including its first-ever Region X Tournament Championship and advancing to the NJCAA Division I Southeast District Tournament semifinals in Daytona Beach, Florida.
