Vandyke Gyau Named NJCAA Division I First-Team All-America

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA -- For the first time in school history, the Richard Bland College of William & Mary men's soccer team has placed a player on the NJCAA Division I All-America team. Sophomore defender Vandyke Gyau earned a prestigious spot on the 11-player team as announced by the NJCAA.

At the conclusion of the 2018 season Gyau (Alexandria/Mount Vernon) was named the Region X Conference Player of the Year, the first time in school history that an RBC player has been chosen.

A First-Team Region X selection as a freshman, and a repeat selection this season, Gyau started in 37 of 38 games in his career, including all 18 in 2018. He has been the anchor of a stingy Statesmen defense the past two years. This past season, Richard Bland allowed just 0.73 goals a game. Behind's Gyau's play, the Statesmen compiled a 14-3-2 record, the second-best in school history under first-year head coach Damien Westfield.

"It is a great tribute for both Vandyke and Richard Bland men's soccer to have the program earn its first NJCAA Division I All-America," said Westfield. "Region X coaches were unanimous in their praise of Vandyke as the Player of the Year, and being named to the All-America team is further tribute to the effort he put forth each and every game."

Gyau is a 2015 graduate of Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, where he was named All-Conference as a junior and senior. He also played volleyball at Datus International School in his native Ghana, earning team MVP honors three times.
