RICHARD BLAND TAKES TWO FROM FLORENCE-DARLINGTON, SNAG TOP SPOT IN REGION X

PETERSBURG, VA, April 5, 2014-The Statesmen battled two tough games against Florence-Darlington on Saturday, but were able to pull away winning 5-3 and 5-2 respectfully.

In the first game, the offense was started with a leadoff homerun by freshman Taylor Slate. Sophomore Sierra Ford took advantage of a passed ball later in the inning to score. Slate and Ford teamed up for four hits and two RBIs.

The Statesmen held onto the lead for good after the 5th inning when sophomore Meredith Lee hit an RBI single scoring Amberly Alston. Tara Heatwole pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed 3 runs, 1 walk and struck out 6.

In game two on the day, the Statesmen finally got on board in the bottom of the 4th inning when Alston hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Marybeth Latham who singled to lead off the inning.

Sierra Ford started off the bottom of the 6th inning with a big 1-out double to center field.  Latham drove in Ford off a hard ground ball double up the middle.  Sophomore Krysten Davis got on base with a walk.  Off a passed ball, runners advanced and Latham would then score off a past ball. Alston reached base on an error by Florence-Darlington's shortstop, which set runners at 1st and 3rd for Tara Heatwole. Heatwole grounded out to short scoring Davis. Making the score 4-1.  Jordan Byrd came up clutch with a 2-out RBI single to left field to score Alston.

In the top of the 7th, Florence-Darlington started the inning off with a double, who would later come to score on a sacrifice fly followed by another double. With 1-out, Heatwole dug deep and struck out the batter and got the next to ground out to Latham to end the game 5-2.

Heatwole only allowed 1 earned run, no walks and struck out 3 in game 2.

With the wins over Florence-Darlington, Richard Bland sits at #1 in the Region X standings. They play at Wake Tech on Saturday and Southeastern CC on Sunday.
