Richard Bland softball program begins its second year on Friday vs. Northwest Florida State
PETERSBURG, Va. – After months of practice, training and conditioning the Richard Bland College softball team is set to begin its 2015 schedule on Friday when it opens up play in the JUCO Kickoff in Clearwater, Fla.
Richard Bland will play seven games in two days. The weekend starts with a single-header at 10 a.m. against Northwest Florida State, Georgia Perimeter at 12 noon, Pasco-Hernando State at 4:20 p.m. and Gulf Coast State at 6:20 p.m.
The weekend concludes with a 9 a.m. game vs. Daytona State, following a 1:20 p.m. first pitch against Tallahassee and a final match-up against Polk State at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday.
RBC is coming off a historic 2014 season that saw the Statesmen win a school-record 24 games en route to its first ever regular season championship title. Head coach Martha Covington, who is entering her second season at the helm of the RBC softball program, returns three letterwinners from that squad.
Sophomore utility Taylor Slate paced the Statesmen last season at the plate with a .464 batting average, adding two doubles, two homers and 12 RBI. Sophomore pitcher Tara Heatwole averaged .250 at the plate and 11 RBI, while sophomore Jordan Byrd was third at bate, averaging .222 at the plate.
The Statesmen add 14 newcomers to the mix including shortstop freshman Whitney Clements who was selected by the National Junior College Athletic Association for the 2015 Top Newcomers.
Friday will be Richard Bland's first meeting with Northwest Florida State, Georgia Perimeter, Pasco-Hernando State and Gulf Coast State. Along with the Statesmen, Pasco-Hernando State is a member of District F Division II.
Saturday will also mark the first meeting with Daytona State, Polk State and Tallahassee.
