STATESMEN SWEEP CCBC CATONSVILLE ON MONDAY

PETERSBURG, Va. – The Richard Bland College softball team swept the Cardinals of CCBC Catonsville in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon to move to 5-6 on the season. The Statesmen came from behind to beat the Cardinals 13-4 in the first game and clinched the second game with a 5-4 win. The Cardinals dropped to 1-6 on the season.

 

New Kent High product, Kristin Saunders got it done in the circle, she allowed four runs over five innings. Saunders struck out four, walked three and gave up six hits.

 

The top of the first saw CCBC Catonsville take an early lead, 2-0 but the Statesmen would answer the Cardinals top inning with two runs of its own in the first.

 

The Statesmen would go on to score six runs in the fifth inning that included a two-run single by Hannah Barnes (Emporia, VA), an RBI triple by Erin Forbes (Camden, NC), an RBI single by Whitney Clements (Prince George) and a two-run double by Saunders to close out the game for its second consecutive five inning run-rule victory on the season.

 

Tara Heatwole (Jamestown) picked up the win on the mound in the second game. She threw seven innings, allowing four runs, eight hits and struck out eight.

 

Six Statesmen collected one hit to combine for a total of six hits on the game, Kim Ellis (L.C. Bird), Amanda Archer (Amelia County), Taylor Slate (Emporia, VA) and Forbes all tallied an RBI apiece.

 

The Statesmen return to action on Friday, Mar. 13th when they host Southeastern Community College of Whiteville for a doubleheader. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
