No. 13 SOFTBALL COMPLETE SWEEP OF WAKE TECH

RALEIGH, N.C. – Freshman Whitney Clements (Prince George, VA) and Sophomore Taylor Slate (Emporia, VA) capped a remarkable day hitting display to combine for nine runs on six hits Monday afternoon, leading Richard Bland to a 14-2, 19-6 doubleheader sweep of Wake Technical Community College at Pleasant Grove Field.

Clements batted 2-for-5 including a triple and two RBI in game one while Slate caught fire in game two, going 4-for-7 with four RBI and one steal.

With the sweep of Wake Tech, RBC improves to 20-9 overall and 14-2 in Region X competition.

RBC led game one 5-0 for much of the contest after Slate scored off an sacrifice fly from Clements in the top of the first. The Statesmen would score one run in the second and three runs in the third sparked by Cindy Allen (Gloucester, VA) single to leftfield to advance runners Hayley Boykin (Courtland, VA) to second while Amanda Archer (Amelia, VA) and Hayley Olson (Richmond, VA) both scored a run. Boykin would score on an error the next play.

RBC wasn't done. In the top of the fourth, both Slate and Hannah Barnes (Emporia, VA) were walked when Clements came to bat to single to leftfield allowing Slate to score. Barnes would score on a ground out by Erin Forbes (Camden, NC) while Clements advanced to third base. Clements scored on a passed ball and Abby Eichelberger (Newport News, VA) scored on a wild pitch to give the Statesmen a 9-0 lead.

The Lady Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth after Brittany Wayne scored on an error by RBC's Jordan Byrd (Chesterfield, VA) and Jessica Cooper singled to leftfield to bring home teammate Lexi Charbonneau.

The Statesmen answered the Lady Eagles two runs in the sixth with when Clements tripled to right field and scored off an error by Wake Tech's short-stop. Mikie Williams (Fredericksburg, VA) scored on a passed ball followed by a Boykin's double to leftfield to send Archer and Eichelberger home.

RBC scored two more runs to close out the game, 14-2 as Kristin Saunders (New Kent, VA) got it done in the circle. She pitched six innings and allowed no earned runs, five hits and two walks while striking out four.

Richard Bland jumped out in front of the Lady Eagles in game two with two quick runs in the top of the first. Slated scored off a wild pitch while Forbes hit a sacrifice fly out to left field to score Clements.

Wake Tech hung in when Jordan Hunt scored on an error to give the Lady Eagles its first run of the game, 3-1 at the bottom of the second inning.

But the Statesmen put together three-run rally in the top of the third to keep control. Barnes single and Forbes double led off (Wake Tech's Pitcher), ignited a run for Barnes to score off a wild pitch and Forbes score on a passed ball. Allen would also score on a passed ball to the push the lead 6-2.

Richard Bland scored a season-high 10 runs in the fourth inning to the Lady Eagles two, from there it was no doubt that the game belonged to the Statesmen as they scored three more runs in the fifth to close out the game, 19-6.

Saunders earned her second win on the day, despite allowing six runs over five innings. She struck out five, walked one and surrendered eight hits.

The Statesmen return to action on Saturday, April 11 on the Statesmen Softball Field against Florence-Darlington Tech. First pitch is at 12 noon.
