SOFTBALL TO HOST NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER FOR SOPHOMORE DAY

PETERSBURG, Va. – The Richard Bland College softball team plays its lone non-conference action of the week and home finale for Sophomore Day on Wednesday when the No. 13 Statesmen host Louisburg for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.

 

The contests will honor four sophomores after the doubleheader including Emporia, Va., native Taylor Slate, Tara Heatwole, native of Williamsburg, Va., Thomas Dale High School product Jordan Byrd and Gloucester High School product Cindy Allen.

 

The Statesmen are 22-9 overall and 16-2 in the Region X Division II Conference heading into the pair of contests, while the Lady Hurricanes are 24-12 overall and 7-5 in Region X DII.

 

Richard Bland took two games over the weekend, salvaging the final game on Saturday with 9-0 win over the Lady Stingers of Florence-Darlington Technical Community College. Erin Forbes (Camden, NC) led the way with a home run, one double and two RBI while Hayley Olson (Richmond, VA) and Amanda Archer (Amelia, VA) each recorded RBI singles. Tara Heatwole (Williamsburg, VA) picked up her 11th victory in the circle by allowing three hits and striking out seven in the complete game effort.

 

Allen recorded her second homer on the season for the Statesmen 13th as a team this season. She has increased her batting average to .294 on the year, while her second home run puts her in a four-way tie with Hannah Barnes (Emporia, VA), Whitney Clements (Prince George, VA) and Olson for second on the homerun list behind Archer who leads the team with four this season.

 

Louisburg is coming off a doubleheader setback to Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday, as the Lady Hurricanes suffered an 8-0 loss to the Louisburg. Ryan Kostandin is hitting .400 on the season for Louisburg, while Megon Smith carries a .396 average into the doubleheader.

 

The Statesmen split the all-time series with the Lady Hurricanes, 1-2.
