SOFTBALL REPEATS AS REGULAR SEASON CHAMPS WITH SWEEP OF PATRICK HENRY

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – The Richard Bland College softball team picked up two Region X conference wins on Saturday afternoon against Patrick Henry Community College. The Statesmen earned a 9-1 victory in the opening contest before clinching an 8-6 win in the nightcap. With the victories, the Statesmen repeat this season as regular season champions for the second consecutive year.

Richard Bland improves to 29-10 overall and 18-2 in Region X play with the wins while Patrick Henry falls to 3-19 on the year and 3-16 in the league after the setback.

The Statesmen post a 7-1 record all-time against the Lady Patriots.

In game one, Richard Bland took charge right from the start, scoring two runs in the first two innings. The Statesmen took advantage of five errors and two hits in the second inning to grab the early advantage. Kristin Saunders (New Kent, VA) held the Lady Patriots to six hits, allowing one run and striking out four to earn the win at the mound.

The momentum would shift in the second game as Patrick Henry had 11 hits compared with the Statesmen nine but the Lady Patriots stranded seven runners on base.

RBC never trailed in the game and would not relinquish the lead as Patrick Henry was unable to weather a seven-run third inning deficit.

Erin Forbes (Camden, VA) racked up two RBI on one hit to lead the Statesmen, she homered in the third inning. Tara Heatwole (Williamsburg, VA) got it done on the rubber, she allowed two runs over four innings. Heatwole struck out four, walked none and gave up six hits. Saunders would put the game away with the final outs to record the save.

As the number one seed, Richard Bland will now await for the Region X Tournament beginning on Friday, May 1 in Burlington, N.C. The Statesmen will face the winner of game one, Florence-Darlington vs. Wake Tech. First pitch is slated for 12 noon.
