WAYCASTER, KING LEAD SOFTBALL TO 8-0 WIN OVER POTOMAC STATE

DINWIDDIE, VA (March 6, 2016) — Freshman Maddison Waycaster doubled home three runs in the bottom of the third inning and freshman pitcher Shannon Buffington scattered five hits in a shutout performance, to lead the Richard Bland College softball team to an 8-0, five-inning victory over Potomac State (WV) College in second day action at the RBC Softball Invitational at the Dinwiddie Sports Complex.

The Statesmen got on the board in each of the first three innings to build a 7-0 cushion and freshman Katelyn King hit the season's first home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the contest. King was the offensive star for the Statesmen, who had a season-high three doubles in the contest. King went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Waycaster had three RBI in her best offensive game of the season.

The victory pushes Richard Bland to 5-11 on the season. The Statesmen will resume play at home next Friday, March 11, hosting Southeastern Community College-Whiteville in Region X Conference doubleheader action starting at 3 p.m.

The home half of the third inning was the game changer, as the Statesmen sent up eight players to bat and got three of their eight hits in the inning. Sophomore Whitney Clements and freshman August Ringer earned hits in the inning with the runs being manufactured thanks to a Buffington walk and King reaching base on an error.

As has been the norm in previous games, Richard Bland got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with two quick runs, getting an RBI double from King and a run scored by sophomore Hannah Barnes, who opened the game with a double, her third in the last two games. Waycaster scored in the bottom of the second off a Potomac State error.
