SOFTBALL ROUNDING INTO FORM HEADING INTO WEEKEND GAMES

PETERSBURG, Va., (March 10, 2016) – Time marches on and its hard to believe that following this weekend the Richard Bland College softball team will reach the halfway point of the 2016 season. But before that happens, the Statesmen have some business at hand: A home doubleheader against Region X Conference opponent Southeastern C.C.-Whiteville on Friday afternoon and an away contest versus Division I Louisburg College on Saturday.

Opponent: Southeastern C.C.-Whiteville (0-12, 0-4) vs. Richard Bland (4-11, 2-2)

Date: Friday, March 11 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

LAST OUTING VS. SOUTHEASTERN C.C.-WHITEVILLE: Played on March 21 at Whiteville, N.C., the Statesmen swept a doubleheader for their first wins of the season, 4-3 and 11-0 in five innings … The first game featured five lead changes and the Statesmen won the game in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Abby Eichelberger led off the inning with a slap single, stole second and third and scored the winning run on a wild pitch … In the second game freshmen pitchers Shannon Buffington and Tabby Dabney combined on the five hit shutout.

 

LAST OUTING VS. LOUISBURG: Played in the 2015 season in Petersburg on April 15, Richard Bland swept a doubleheader in two close contests, 6-5, 7-6. at Petersburg on March 13, RBC won both games of a doubleheader, 5-4 and 9-3 … In games played at Whiteville on March 29, the Statesmen prevailed 6-1 and 4-1. 

 

BARNES' BAT: Sophomore Hannah Barnes leads the Statesmen in hitting with a .346 average, total hits (18) and doubles (4) … She has used her fleet speed as well, stealing a team-best seven bases.

 

BRING HOME THE RUNS; Sophomore Whitney Clements leads the team in RBI with nine.

 

GETTING ON BASE: Sophomore Kimberly Ellis has a keen eye, witnessed by her team-best nine walks.

 

ROUND TRIPPER: Freshman Katelyn King launched the season's first home run last Sunday against Potomac State of West Virginia, driving the walkoff win over the left centerfield fence.

 

A SINGLE TRIPLE: The Statesmen have one triple this season and that belongs to emerging freshman August Ringer.

 

ON THE HILL: Freshman Shannon Buffington has shouldered the pitching duties for most of the season, appearing in 13 games and starting in 10 of them … She owns all four of RBC's wins this season while logging 66.2 innings on the mound … She has struck out 24 batters and sports a 3.04 ERA … Seven her 10 starts have been complete-game efforts.

 

BATS COMING ALIVE: In the last five games, the Statesmen have wrapped out eight doubles.

 

ABOUT SOUTHEASTERN C.C.-WHITEVILLE: The Rams are 0-12 this season and will look to get their offense going against the Statesmen, as the team has averaged just two runs a game.

 

ABOUT LOUISBURG: The Hurricanes are 12-2 and are in the midst of an eight-game winning streak … Nine players currently hit over .300 and opponents average just .198, second best in the nation … Opponents score 2.48 runs per game.

 

WHAT'S NEXT: Following Friday and Saturday's games, the Statesmen host Herkimer College in doubleheader action on Saturday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
