SEVENTH INNING HEROICS LEADS STATESMEN TO SWEEP OVER SOUTHEASTERN C.C.

PETERSBURG, Va., (March 11, 2016) – The Richard Bland College softball team saved its best innings of its doubleheader against Southeastern Community College-Whiteville for last, winning both games in its last at bat, taking the opener 6-5 and the nightcap 5-4 under brilliant spring sunshine in Region X Conference play at Statesmen Field on Friday night.

While both wins were earned with a late game rally, the second game was the most dramatic, as the Statesmen scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to nip Southeastern C.C., which was looking for its first win of the season.

The doubleheader sweep was the third straight win for Richard Bland, which improves to 7-11, 4-2 in Region X play. Southeastern C.C. drops to 0-14, 0-6. Richard Bland will be back in action on Saturday with a road doubleheader against Division I Louisburg College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Freshman Shannon Buffington earned both wins for the Statesmen, pitching a complete-game victory in the opener and relieving freshman Katelyn Cobb in the nightcap. Sophomore Hannah Barnes was the offensive stalwart for RBC, going 3-for7 to raise her season's average to a team-best .356.

Barnes opened the game with a lead-off triple to ignite the offense, which provided Buffington with a 3-1 lead after five innings in a rapidly played game. Southeastern parlayed two singles, a walk and a double in its home sixth to surge ahead 5-3. The Statesmen knotted the contest 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth following a single by freshman Katelyn King and a walk to freshman Tabby Dabney. The big blow came from sophomore Mikie Williams who laced a line drive single to left field with two outs that tied the contest.

Quality at bats in the seventh inning led to the win. Sophomore Haley Boykin walked to lead off the inning and was pinch run for by sophomore Kimberly Ellis. A walk to Buffington put runners on first and second and a single to right field by sophomore Whitney Clements and a hesitation yhrow by the Rams right fielder emabled the speedy Ellis to score the winning run.

Cobb pitched one of her best games of the season in the nightcap, but the RBC bats didn't come alive until the seventh inning when the Statesmen pounded out three of their four hits in the game.

Southeastern scored in the top of the first and RBC knotted the game in its home third. Cobb ran into trouble in the top of the sixth, allowing three runs. Buffington came in to shut the Rams down, but the Statesmen trailed 4-1. Buffington helped her cause in the bottom half of the seventh by drawing a leadoff walk and scored after Williams pounded a double into the left field gap. A Barnes RBI single to left drew RBC within 4-3 and a triple by Ellis to center knotted the contest 4-4. Clements then doubled home Ellis and in a rapid sequence the Statesmen earned the 5-4 victory.
