SOFTBALL HEADS TO PATRICK HENRY FOR SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER

PETERSBURG, Va., (April 21, 2016) – The final regular season road doubleheader of the season awaits the Richard Bland College softball team, as the Statesmen travel to Patrick Henry Community College on Saturday, April 23 in Region X Conference action.

The Statesmen (16-16, 12-4) are coming off a split with Surry Community College last Saturday, losing the opener 7-6, but taking the second game, 8-5.  Patrick Henry (3-18, 3-10) last faced Florence-Darlington and will conclude its regular season against the Statesmen.

LAST OUTING VS. PATRICK HENRY: Played in Petersburg on March 26, the Statesmen won both ends of the doubleheader by identical 3-2 scores. In the opener, sophomore Amanda Archer belted a big two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to spearhead the victory. In the nightcap the Statesmen built a 3-0 lead thanks to a Archer double and held off a late Patriots rally with freshman pitcher Shannon Buffington shutting PHCC down and sophomore outfielder Hayley Olson making a game-ending sliding catch from centerfield.

BASE STEALERS: The Statesmen have only been caught stealing twice this season, which is 20th best in NJCAA Division II this season … RBC is 51-of-53 on the base paths.

HIT PARADE: On the season, RBC has five home runs, eight triples, 35 doubles, 268 hits and 334 total bases.

BY THE NUMBERS: Of the regular lineup, seven players currently hit over .300, led by sophomore Whitney Clements at .394 … She is followed by fellow sophomore Hannah Barnes at .386, Abby Eichelberger follows at .362 … In one week, Clements rose her batting average from .364 to .394 … Off the bench sophomore Mikie Williams has belted two home runs, tying her for the team lead with Archer.

CATEGORY LEADERS: Barnes leads in hits with 44, triples (three), doubles (10).  and is tied with Buffington in doubles with six … Barnes has two of the teams eight triples and Archer has belted two of the teams three home runs … On a hot streak, Clements is now the team leader in RBI with 23 … Eight players have cracked double figures in RBI.

ON THE HILL: Freshman Shannon Buffington has shouldered the pitching duties for most of the season, appearing in 25 of 32 games and starting in 17 of them … She owns 13 of RBC's 16 wins this season while logging 114.2 innings on the mound … She has struck out 37 batters and sports a 2.93 ERA … Eleven of her 16 starts have been complete-game efforts.

BATS WARMING UP: This season, RBC has scored 18 runs against Wake Tech twice, representing the most runs in a single game since tallying 16 against Wake Tech last March 25 … In the last two games against Wake Tech, RBC tallied 35 runs, the most in back-to-back games in program history … The previous record was 30 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Rappahannock Community College on March 16, 2014.

WHAT'S NEXT: Following Saturday's games, the Statesmen will play their final regular season home game of the season, hosting Region X Conference-leading Florence Darlington on Friday, April 29 at 4 p.m.
