SOFTBALL READY FOR REGION X CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

PETERSBURG, VA., (May 5, 2016) – The road to the NJCAA Division II National Championship begins in earnest for the Richard Bland College softball team on Friday at Noon, when the Statesmen face the winner of No. 3 Pasco-Hernando vs. No. 6 Patrick Henry game in the Region X Conference Tournament at Springwood Park in Burlington, N.C.

The Region X Conference Tournament has a six-team double elimination format that runs Friday and Saturday, with Sunday serving as the rainout day. The seeds are No. 15 nationally-ranked and top seed Florence-Darlington (28-9); No. 2 Richard Bland (18-18, 10-6), No. 3 Pasco-Hernando (19-13), No. 4 Surry (18-25, 9-7), No. 4 Southeastern (14-21, 4-11) and No. 6 Patrick Henry (3-23, 1-15). Florida-based Pasco-Hernando competes in the Region X Tournament due to geographic alignment.

In the double elimination tournament, Richard Bland will play its second game on Friday against an opponent to be determined.

LAST OUTING VS. PATRICK HENRY: The Statesmen swept the season series over the Patriots, winning both of the March 26 games by 3-2 margins … RBC won the April 23 games by narrow 1-0 score in nine innings and 11-0 in the nightcap.

LAST OUTING VS. PASCO-HERNANDO: The Statesmen faced the Conquistadors at the JUCO Kickoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida, losing 9-6.

HIT PARADE: On the season, RBC has six home runs, 11 triples, 37 doubles, 291 hits and 390 total bases.

BY THE NUMBERS: Of the regular lineup, seven players currently hit over .300, led by sophomore Whitney Clements who tops the list after a recent offensive surge at .414 … She is followed by fellow sophomore Hannah Barnes at .368, Abby Eichelberger follows at .353 … In a three-week span, Clements rose her batting average from .364 to .414.

CATEGORY LEADERS: Barnes leads in hits with 49, triples (five), doubles (10) … On a hot streak, Clements is now the team leader in RBI with 28 and has 48 hits … She leads in OBP (.485), while Barnes leads in slugging percentage (.519) … Nine players have cracked double figures in RBI ... Sophomore Amanda Archer has belted a team-best three home runs this year.

ON THE HILL: Freshman Shannon Buffington has shouldered the pitching duties for most of the season, appearing in 29 of 36 games and starting in 20 of them … She owns 15 of RBC's 17 wins this season while logging 134.2 innings on the mound … She has struck out 45 batters and sports a 2.34 ERA … Thirteen of her 20 starts have been complete-game efforts.

WHAT'S NEXT: Depending on how the bracket unfolds, the Statesmen will play a second game on Friday at 2 p.m. A victory in either of the first two games guarantees RBC will play at least one game on Saturday.
