Richard Bland Welcomes Harford (Md.) Community College

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College will welcome Harford (Md.) Community College in its home softball opener on Friday afternoon, February 24, a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.  The Statesmen (3-6, 3-1) won three of four Region 10 games last weekend ahead of this non-region competition.  The Fighting Owls (0-0) will be opening their 2017 campaign at Richard Bland.

Scouting the Statesmen
Richard Bland is 3-6 overall after splitting two games at Region 10 opponent Florence-Darlington (S.C.) on Feb. 18.  The Statesmen are coached by head coach Katy Lampman, who is in her first season, while assisted by first-year assistant coaches Cassidy Clayton, Pete Berrios and Danielle Beverly.

Through nine games, Richard Bland has been led offensively by freshman Brooklynn Bilyard/Culpeper, who is hitting .423 with two home runs, four doubles, seven runs, 11 RBIs and two stolen bases.  Bilyard is followed by sophomores Tabby Dabney/Mechanicsville (.345, 2 HRs, 4 Rs, 8 RBIs) and August Ringer/Yale (.333, 4 Rs, 1 RBI), freshman Taylor Daniel/Alberta (.323, 7 Rs, 2 SBs) and sophomore Katelyn King/Chesterfield (.276, 1 2B, 4 Rs, 1 RBI).

The Statesmen pitching staff has been led by sophomore Shannon Buffington/Virginia Beach and Tabby Dabney. Buffington is 2-2 with a 3.04 earned run average and 10 strikeouts in 25.1 innings with three complete games in four appearances.  Dabney is 1-2 with a 3.61 earned run average and eight strikeouts in 21.1 innings with two complete games in four appearances.

Series History
Richard Bland and Harford are playing for just the third and fourth times in the sport of softball, as the Statesmen lead the young series 2-0.  Richard Bland swept a 2014 home doubleheader against the Fighting Owls by scores of 13-1 and 12-1 on March 9 (2014).  The two schools have been scheduled to play each of the past two seasons, as well; however, those contests were canceled each year due to inclement weather.

Richard Bland travels to the College of Southern Maryland for a doubleheader on March 8 at 2 p.m. in La Plata, Maryland.  The Statesmen return home to host Region 10 member Southeastern Community College-Whiteville (N.C.) on March 10 for a pair of games starting at 2 p.m.
