Richard Bland Back In Action At Southern Maryland On Wednesday

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College will return to softball action for the first time in 12 days with a road doubleheader at the College of Southern Maryland on Wednesday, March 8, beginning at 2 p.m.  The Statesmen (4-7, 3-1) last played on February 24, splitting a home twinbill against NJCAA Division I Harford (Md.) Community College (4-6, 12-4).  The Hawks (2-0, 0-0) opened their season with a pair of wins at Rappahannock Community College (16-1, 17-2) on March 4.

Scouting the Statesmen
Richard Bland is 4-7 overall after splitting the two games against Harford (Md.).  The Statesmen are coached by head coach Katy Lampman, who is in her first season, while assisted by first-year assistant coaches Cassidy Clayton, Pete Berrios and Danielle Beverly.

Through 11 games, Richard Bland has been led offensively by freshman Brooklynn Bilyard/Culpeper, who is hitting .452 with two home runs, four doubles, nine runs, 12 RBIs and three stolen bases.  Bilyard is followed by sophomore Tabby Dabney/Mechanicsville (.389, 2 HRs, 1 2B, 6 Rs, 10 RBIs, 2 SBs), freshman Taylor Daniel/Alberta (.385, 1 2B, 10 Rs, 2 RBIs, 2 SBs) and sophomore August Ringer/Yale (.342, 6 Rs, 2 RBIs, 1 SB).

The Statesmen pitching staff has been led by sophomore Shannon Buffington/Virginia Beach and Tabby Dabney. Buffington is 2-3 with a 3.25 earned run average and 15 strikeouts over 32.1 innings with four complete games in five appearances.  Dabney is 2-2 with a 3.72 earned run average and 12 strikeouts over 26.1 innings with three complete games in five appearances.

Series History
Richard Bland and Southern Maryland are playing for just the fourth and fifth times in the sport of softball, as the Statesmen lead the young series 3-0.  Richard Bland swept a 2015 road doubleheader against the Hawks by scores of 9-0 and 12-4 on April 19, 2015.  The Statesmen defeated Southern Maryland 4-3 last March 5, 2016 during the RBC Softball Invitational played at the Dinwiddie Sports Complex.  Shannon Buffington earned the complete-game pitching victory against the Hawks, scattering seven hits and three runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and one walk over 7.0 innings.

Richard Bland returns home to welcome Region 10 member Southeastern Community College-Whiteville (N.C.) for a doubleheader on Friday, March 10 at 2 p.m.  The Statesmen remain at home to host nearby Southside Virginia Community College next Wednesday, March 15 for a pair of games starting at 5 p.m.
