Richard Bland Plays On The Road At Surry (N.C.) On Saturday

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College will play on the road at Region 10 opponent Surry (N.C.) Community College for a softball doubleheader on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m. in Dobson, North Carolina.  The Statesmen are 6-9 overall, 4-2 in Region 10, currently alone in second place among the seven region schools competing in the sport.  The Knights are 8-10 overall, 1-3 in Region 10.

Scouting the Statesmen
Richard Bland is 6-9 overall after splitting two games against Southeastern Community College-Whiteville (N.C.) on March 10 (9-11, 17-12).  The Statesmen are coached by head coach Katy Lampman, who is in her first season, while assisted by first-year assistant coaches Cassidy Clayton, Pete Berrios and Danielle Beverly.

Through 15 games, Richard Bland has been led offensively by sophomore Tabby Dabney/Mechanicsville, who is hitting .462 with three home runs, one triple, four doubles, 12 runs, 15 RBIs and two stolen bases.  Dabney is followed by freshman Brooklynn Bilyard/Culpeper (.447, 2 HRs, 6 2Bs, 16 Rs, 15 RBIs, 6 SBs), classmate Taylor Daniel/Alberta (.393, 1 3B, 3 2Bs, 15 Rs, 4 RBIs, 2 SBs), sophomore August Ringer/Yale (.321, 10 Rs, 3 RBIs, 2 SB) and classmate Katelyn King/Chesterfield (.308, 1 HR, 3 2Bs, 13 Rs, 5 RBIs, 1 SB).

The Statesmen pitching staff has been led by sophomore Shannon Buffington/Virginia Beach and Tabby Dabney. Buffington is 2-5 with a 3.66 earned run average and 17 strikeouts over 36.1 innings with four complete games in seven appearances.  Dabney is 2-2 with a 4.98 earned run average and 16 strikeouts over 32.1 innings with three complete games in seven appearances.

Series History
Richard Bland and Surry are playing for the 17th and 18th times in the sport of softball, and the series is currently tied at 8-8.  The average margin of victory by the Statesmen in their eight wins is 3.4 runs, while the Knights' average margin has been 2.5 runs.  The two schools split four games last season with Richard Bland winning both contests by identical 8-5 scores … on April 9 at home and on April 16 in North Carolina.

Richard Bland returns home to welcome NJCAA Division I Louisburg (N.C.) College next Wednesday, March 22 for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at the RBC Softball Field.  The Statesmen will travel to play at Region 10 member Patrick Henry Community College on Friday, March 24 at 1 p.m. in Martinsville.
