NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Sophomore Sierra Johnson/Capron and freshman Ashley Fritz/North Chesterfield each had a hit in game one, while sophomores Tabby Dabney/Mechanicsville and August Ringer/Yale each had two hits in game two, as Richard Bland College dropped a softball doubleheader at NCAA Division III Christopher Newport University on Tuesday night in Newport News.  Sophomore Shannon Buffington/Virginia Beach had the pitching decision in the 14-1 opener for the visiting Statesmen (9-14), while Tabby Dabney had the pitching decision in the 10-2 nightcap against the host Captains (17-7), ranked 20th in last week's NFCA Division III Top 25 Poll.

In the opener, Richard Bland scored one run on two hits, plating the run in the fourth inning of the run-rule shortened contest that included a nearly three-hour weather delay in the bottom of the first inning.  In the fourth, Dabney (0-0) walked and later crossed the plate with an unearned run courtesy of a fielding error.

Fritz (1-2) collected a one-out double in the third, while Johnson (1-1) added a pinch-hit single in the fifth while leading off for the Statesmen.

Buffington (3-7) started in the circle and tossed the first 1.2 innings, yielding six hits and eight runs, three earned, with no strikeouts and one walk.  Dabney pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and six runs, four earned, with two strikeouts and a hit batter.

In the nightcap that began at 8:38 p.m., Richard Bland scored two runs on seven hits, earning both runs in the fifth inning of the run-rule shortened contest.  In the fifth, Dabney (2-3, RBI) and Justice (1-3, RBI) each provided two-out, RBI singles.  Fritz (1-2) and freshman Kara Morris/Kents Store (1-3) crossed the plate for the Statesmen.

Dabney and Ringer (2-3) each collected two hits in game two for Richard Bland.

Dabney (3-3) started in the circle and tossed the first 1.2 innings, yielding four hits and four runs, all unearned, with no strikeouts and three walks.  Buffington pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and two walks.

Richard Bland will play at Wake Technical (N.C.) Community College in Region 10 action on Thursday, March 30 at 2 p.m. in Raleigh, North Carolina.
