Richard Bland Names Katie Haney Athlete of the Week

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College freshman softball standout Katie Haney/Burkeville has been named the Athletics Department's Athlete of the Week for the period March 13-19.  The infielder led the Statesmen (11-6) in four games played this past week.

Haney hit .583 (7-12) with one home run, one triple, four runs, two RBIs and one stolen base in the four contests.  She was 2-3 with her first collegiate home run, two runs and one RBI during a 6-3 setback in game two at NJCAA Division I Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.) on March 18, after going 2-3 with one run during an 8-0 win in game one at SMC.  Haney was also 2-3 with the triple and one RBI during a 9-4 setback in game two against visiting No. 14 Florence-Darlington Tech (S.C.) on March 16, following a 1-3 effort with one run and the stolen base during a 4-3 setback in game one against FDT.

Haney has started seven of nine games played this season, hitting .471 (8-17) with one home run, one triple, five runs, two RBIs and one stolen base.  She adds a .471 on-base percentage, a .765 slugging percentage and an .889 fielding percentage.  Katie was named to the Athletic Director's Academic Excellence List for the 2017 Fall Semester, as well, attaining a semester grade point average of 4.0.

Q: How does it feel to be named Richard Bland Athlete of the Week?
KH: It's an honor to represent my school and be recognized for my hard work.

Q: How did you get started in your sport and how long have you played?
KH: I started playing in a recreational league near my home when I was 10, and fell in love with the game.

Q: What do you like most about your team?
KH: I like our team dynamic.  I feel we have such a diverse and talented team, and we work really well together.

Q: Who is your funniest teammate/why?
KH: Kamryn Lanier.  She's so goofy and carefree to be around … one look and she can make me laugh.

Q: Do you have any pregame rituals/superstitions?
KH: Kam and I always listen to 'Stir Fry' by Migos; it's bad luck if we don't.

Q: What is your favorite place on campus/why?
KH: My room on campus where my favorite thing to do is take naps.

Q: What is your favorite class/professor/why?
KH: My favorite class has been statistics; I love math.  I don't have a favorite professor, I've been blessed with all of my professors so far.  They all have been beneficial to my success at Richard Bland.
