Richard Bland Splits Two Games At No. 16 Pitt (N.C.) 4-8, 5-2

WINTERVILLE, N.C. -- Sophomore Kay'Lee Justice/Suffolk had two hits, including a home run, in the nightcap, while freshman Katie Haney/Burkeville had a double and two RBIs in the opener, as Richard Bland split a softball doubleheader at No. 16 Pitt (N.C.) on Thursday in Winterville, North Carolina.  Sophomore Brooklynn Bilyard/Culpeper earned the complete-game pitching victory in the 5-2 nightcap for the visiting Statesmen (12-7, 4-6), while freshman Megan Vincent/Boykins took the pitching setback in the 4-8 opener against the host and nationally-ranked Bulldogs (16-2, 7-1).

In game one, Richard Bland had four runs on eight hits … scoring one run in the second inning, one run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth.  The Statesmen fell behind 6-1 through three innings before closing within 6-4 in the sixth before the hosts added two runs for the final four-run margin.

Freshman Allison Jarrett/Virginia Beach was 2-2 with one RBI, classmate Caitlin Stout/Dinwiddie was 2-3 and Haney was 1-3 with a double, one run and two RBIs to lead Richard Bland.  Freshman Kayla Hand/Chesapeake added an RBI, as well, freshman Taylor Bilyard/Culpeper was 1-3 with a walk and two runs and classmate Mary Simms/Orange was 1-3 with a double and one run.

Vincent (3-3) started in the circle, while freshman Joana Holland/Manassas pitched in relief.

In game two, Richard Bland had five runs on 10 hits … scoring two runs in the fourth inning and one run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh.  The Statesmen took leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2 toward the final three-run margin.

Justice was 2-4 with the home run, her second of the season, Taylor Bilyard was 2-4 with one run and two RBIs and Simms was 2-4 to lead Richard Bland.  Stout was 2-3 with a double, one run and an RBI, while Brooklynn Bilyard was 1-3 with a triple and a run.

Brooklynn Bilyard (4-1) started in the circle and pitched the 7.0 innings, scattering five hits and two runs, one earned, with five strikeouts and four walks.

Richard Bland will travel to play at Region 10 opponent Wake Tech (N.C.) on Wednesday, March 28, a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Raleigh, North Carolina.  The Statesmen had been scheduled to play at Surry (N.C.) on Saturday, March 24, but that doubleheader has been postponed until a later date due to wet weather forecasts this weekend in North Carolina.
