Richard Bland Sweeps Visiting Bryant & Stratton 6-1, 8-0 (5)

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. – Freshman Allison Jarrett/Virginia Beach had two hits and one RBI in the first game, and added two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs in the second game, as Richard Bland swept a Region 10 softball doubleheader against Bryant & Stratton on Wednesday at the Statesman Softball Field.  Freshman Megan Vincent/Boykins earned the pitching victory in the 6-1 opener for the host Statesmen (20-9, 9-7 Region 10), while sophomore Brooklynn Bilyard/Culpeper gained the pitching triumph in the five-inning, 8-0 nightcap against the visiting Bobcats (4-20, 0-14 Region 10).

In game one, Richard Bland had six runs on six hits … scoring one run in the second inning, three runs in the third, and one run each in the fifth and sixth innings for the victory.  The Statesmen fell behind 1-0 in the first before tying it at 1-1 in the second and taking leads of 4-1 and 5-1 toward the final five-run margin.

Jarrett was 2-3 with one RBI, sophomore Kamryn Lanier/Chester was 1-3 with one run, one RBI and one walk and freshman Katie Haney/Burkeville was 0-2 with a sacrifice fly and one RBI.  Freshman Skyler Bagnall/Ivor was 1-2 with two runs, two walks and two stolen bases, and Brooklynn Bilyard was 1-2 with a double, one run, two walks and one stolen base.

Vincent (7-3) started in the circle and pitched the complete-game 7.0 innings, yielding just three hits and one run, unearned, with seven strikeouts and no walks.

In game two, Richard Bland had eight runs on eight hits … scoring one run each in the first and second innings, four runs in the third and two runs in the fourth for the run-rule victory.

Jarrett was 2-2 with the home run, the first of her collegiate career, a sacrifice fly, two runs and three RBIs, Haney was 1-2 with a triple, one run, one RBI, one walk and one stolen base, and freshman Taylor Bilyard/Culpeper was 1-2 with a sacrifice fly, one run and one RBI.  Freshman Mary Simms/Orange was 1-2 with a triple, two runs and one walk, and Bagnall was 1-2 with one run and one stolen base.

Brooklynn Bilyard (7-2) started in the circle and pitched the complete-game 5.0 shutout innings, scattering four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Richard Bland remains at home to complete its current homestand … hosting another Region 10 doubleheader against Pitt (N.C.) on Friday, April 13, at 3 p.m.  Admission is free to all home softball contests.
