Softball Splits Doubleheader At USC Salkehatchie, 0-3, 8-5

The Richard Bland College of William & Mary softball team split its doubleheader against USC Salkehatchie on Saturday afternoon. The Statesmen fell to Salkehatchie in game one 0-3, but took the win in game two with a score of 8-5.

The Statesmen are now 2-9 on the season, while Salkehatchie improves to 11-10. RBC continues its road trip over the weekend, next facing USC Salkehatchie in doubleheader action on Sunday.

FIRST GAME

Richard Bland College watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 3-0 loss to Salkehatchie on Saturday.The pitching was strong on both sides. Salkehatchie pitchers struck out ten, while Statesmen's sophomore Joanna Holland sat down nine. Holland was in the pitcher's circle for Richard Bland College. She went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out nine and walking one. Salkehatchie got things started in the second inning when an error scored two runs. One bright spot for Richard Bland College was a single by freshman Haley Godfrey in the third inning. Godfrey and sophomore Mary Simms each collected one hit to lead the statesmen. Salkehatchie racked up six hits. Bell and Byrd all collected multiple hits for Salkehatchie. 

SECOND GAME

The Statesmen took the lead late and defeated Salkehatchie 8-5 on Saturday. The game was tied at five with Richard Bland College batting in the top of the fifth when freshman Teri Jackson singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run. Richard Bland College earned the victory despite allowing Salkehatchie to score three runs in the third inning. Salkehatchie's big inning was driven by a single by Peters and a double by Hardee.The Statesmen got on the board in the first inning when an error scored one run. Richard Bland College put up three runs in the second inning. Sophomore Skylar Bagnall and sophomore Allison Jarrett each had RBIs in the second inning. Sophomore Megan Vincent got the start for Richard Bland College. She lasted seven innings, allowing nine hits and five runs while striking out four and walking zero.. Richard Bland College tallied one home run on the day, which was produced by freshman Kendra Cattanach in the fourth inning. The Statesmen tallied 11 hits on the day. Jackson, Jarrett, freshman Madison Kelly, and Godfrey each racked up multiple hits. Godfrey, Kelly, Jarrett, and Jackson each collected two hits to lead the team.Salkehatchie scattered nine hits in the game. 

Statesmen's head coach Troy Jacobs stated, "The team is starting to play together and work together. Our philosophy is very simple. Once we unite, no one can break us apart."
