Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Salkehatchie, 0-2, 2-4

YEMASSEE, SC-- The Richard Bland College of William & Mary softball team dropped its doubleheader against USC Salkehatchie on Sunday afternoon. The Statesmen fell to Salkehatchie in game one 0-2, and in game two with a score of 2-4.

The Statesmen are now 2-11 on the season, while Salkehatchie improves to 13-10. RBC continues its play during Spring Break, next facing Harford Community College in a doubleheader action at home on Wednesday, March 6 at 10 am and 12 pm.

FIRST GAME

The Statesmen made consecutive contact throughout the game with only two strikeouts, but the hits were constantly right to the Salkehatchie players. Salkehatchie was sure-handed and did not commit one error throughout the game. Salkehatchie was able to score one run in the second inning with a single hit by Hiers. The Statesmen had a high energy inning when sophomore Mary Simms produced a double in the fourth inning. Freshman Kiara Toler started the game for the Statesmen, and she went three innings allowing two runs on five hits and walking zero. Sophomore Megan Vincent took the loss for Richard Bland, but she surrendered zero hits over four innings, striking out six and walking zero. Simms, sophomore Jez Chitty, and sophomore Katie Haney each collected one hit to lead the Statesmen. Richard Bland had zero errors with freshman Teri Jackson making six plays to lead the team.

SECOND GAME

The Statesmen struggled to adjust to the Salkehatchie pitcher's rise ball in game two. Sophomore Joana Holland led things off in the pitchers circle for the Statesmen. She surrendered four runs on four hits over six innings, striking out four. The game was evenly matched with both teams getting three outs rather quickly each inning. An error in the bottom of the third inning allowed Salkehatchie to gain two runs. A lazy flyball to centerfield occurred right after the error to give Salkehatchie their two other runs. The Statesmen fought back in the sixth inning when freshman Haley Godfrey started things off with a hit to right field to get a single. Sophomore Allison Jarrett slammed one right up the middle to advance Godfrey to second base and earned a single. Simms crushed the ball in the center-right field gap to earn a double and score Godfrey and Jarrett . Godfrey, sophomore Jasmine Turner, Simms, and Jarrett each collected on hit each to lead the Statesmen.
