SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA--The Richard Bland College of William & Mary softball team swept its doubleheader against Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday morning with scores of 9-5 and 16-7. The Statesmen were strong in their at bats taking the lead early in both games.
The Statesmen improve to 8-11 on the season, while Spartanburg Metodist falls to 7-11. RBC will next play on Saturday, March 16 at home against and Brookdale at 2 pm and Paul D. Camp Community College at 4 pm.
FIRST GAME
Richard Bland took the victory over Spartanburg with a score of 9-5. Sophomore Katie Haney was an RBI machine for the Statesmen driving in five runs on two hits. Haney drove in runs on a grand slam in the first inning and a walk in the seventh. Sophomore Megan Vincent led RBC to victory in the pitchers circle. She went four innings, allowing four runs on four hits, striking out five and walking one. The Statesmen hit two homeruns in the first game. Freshman Erin Doyle hit one deep in the sixth inning. Haney hit her grand slam in the first inning. RBC was able to rack up seven hits. Sophomore Mary Simms and Haney all had multiple hits for Richard Bland. Haney and Simms each collected two hits to lead the Statesmen.
SECOND GAME
Six runs batted in from Doyle helped lead RBC past Spartanburg 16-7 in the second game. Doyle drove in runs on a single in the third, a single in the fourth, and a homerun in the sixth. The Statesmen notched six runs in the sixth inning to shut down Spartanburg's momentum. Doyle and freshman Teri Jackson all contributed in the sixth innings with RBIs. Freshman Kiara Toler earned the win for the Statesmen. She lasted three and a third innings, allowing two hits and one run while walking zero. Vincent threw two and two-thirds innings in relief for Toler. Richard Bland collected three homeruns in game two. Doyle her second homerun on the day in the sixth inning. Jackson had a grand slam in the sixth inning. Sophomore Allison Jarrett drilled one over the fence in the third inning. The Statesmen earned nine hits in the game. Doyle and freshman Madison Kelly all collected multiple hits. Doyle went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the team.
Head coach Troy Jacobs stated," I am very proud of the team, they stepped up under adverse conditions. We sweep South Carolina this weekend."
