Softball Sweeps Visiting USC Sumter, 7-2, 6-4

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA--The Richard Bland College of William & Mary softball team swept its doubleheader against visiting USC Sumter Saturday morning with scores of 7-2 and 6-4. The Statesmen were strong in their at-bats taking the lead early in both games.

The Statesmen improve to 13-17 on the season, while USC Sumter falls to 15-15. RBC will next play on Sunday, April 7 at home against USC Sumter again at 11 am and 1 pm.

GAME ONE

Richard Bland was able to get ahead and stay ahead of Sumter to take the win with a score of 7-2. Sophomore Megan Vincent was the winning pitcher for RBC. She lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out five and walking one. Sophomore Katie Haney had an in the park grand slam. She drilled one to right field and quickly ran all the bases before Sumter could get the ball back into the infield. Haney led the team in hits going 2-for-3 at the plate.  

GAME TWO

The Statesmen were able to seize victory thanks to a walk-off home run at the end of the game to outscore Sumter. RBC was down 3-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning when freshman Erin Doyle homered on a 3-0 count, scoring three runs. Doyle was able to help drive the team to victory by hitting in a total of five runs in the game. Her first home run was in the first inning, which scored two runs. Sumter was able to tie the game back up at the top of the sixth inning when Nisbet singled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run. Vincent led RBC to victory in the pitcher's circle. She surrendered one run on three hits over three and a third innings. She was able to strike out four and walked zero. Doyle and sophomore Kayla Hand all managed multiple hits for RBC. Doyle led the team in hits going 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in two home runs in the game.
